In Werner Herzog's new film The Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans, Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs - while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (played by Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.

 A Very Bad Lieutenant Indeed!

Werner Herzog, perhaps better known for his brilliant documentaries and off-the-wall movies has produced a film that manages to rock the cop genre completely off its hinges. "Herzog, directing a cop movie?" I hear you cry; and not just any old cop movie, but a very good one.
Cage plays the titular Lieutenant with enough sazzle and panache as to warrant an Oscar nod, and be the odds-on favourite to boot. His drug-addled descent into chaos is simply awesome, and the fact that this druggy existence was born from a moment of compassion resulting in a back injury makes it all the more genius - exactly the kind of thing you'd expect from Herzog.
Cage's performance aside, the film manages to throw in some bizarrely obscure moments, including a soul breakdancing into the afterlife and a strangely intimate close-up of an iguana and bearded dragon, just chilling during a stake-out. Also, who else but Herzog would decide to throw in some camerawork from the view of a roadside alligator, watching the baffling humans as they stand over his dead friend in the middle of a Louisianan highway?
This film not only toys with the viewer's expectations, but instead enhances them, making you wish more films had this director's courage to throw some much-needed curve balls into an established genre. The Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans might not only be Herzog's best film to date, but also Cage's, delivering the performance of his career.

This is certainly the best performance Nicolas cage has given in quite some time! Hes one messed up individual in this movie and a very bad man indeed with a serious drug addiction! Its great the way Cage portrays his badass uncaring character making it very believable the acting is superb! The story is quite simple and deals with murder and mainly drugs but keeps you engrossed for the full two hours! Its certainly one cop movie you will never see again and worth checking out if you like this type of genre! There are some good features too.

A Mean and Moody movie, not the normal sanitised stuff that comes out of Hollywood with Happy Endings and oodles of Sunshine.
The story is fairly straight forward following a Off the Hinges Cop on a case.
But it is all done with Flair and has some nice little Twists n Turns and is Funny in a Dark Twisted Way.
The film has a fair few surreal moments that dont make much sense, but thats what you get from a director like Werner Herzog, so its better to just go with it.
The cherry on the cake is the Amazingly Edgy performance by Nicolas Cage as an immoral Cop with some very dark shades of grey.
Eva Mendes is also very good in a small role.
Different kinda Cop movie which is worth watching for Nicolas Cage's performance alone.

Cage gives a wonderfully unhinged performance that more than makes up for his recent foray into Bruckheimer kiddyfests.

Much more watchable than the original, on which this is extremely loosely based, it even manages to pull off a happy ending.

The perfomances are uniformly excellent, and Cage is definitely back to his best.

My only minor gripe is that there is no lenticular sleeve, as mentioned in the product description.

It's a tough one to review is this loose reamke of the cult 1992 original. To be honest i was not much of a fan of the 1992 original.
Nicholas Cage is outstanding as the corrupt, drug fueled Lieutenant as he has to deal with his addiction to pain killers, coke, gambling, loose women, his call girl girlfriend and the small matter of the cold blooded execution of a poor New Orleans family.
The film is shot in such a erratic fashion that matches Cages drug fueld unhinged performance perfectly, but in doing so the film has very little narrative, as Director Herzog all of a sudded takes the camera perspective of a road side Allicator or goes up close on a couple of lizards. The destruction of Hurricain Katrina blasted New Orleans is brilliantly and starkly shot, and does add to the films depth as most of the location looks like a warzone.
The major flaw in the film is the happy up beat ending that goes against the path of self destruction Cage's character was heading.
No doubt the movie needs a few watches to fully appreciate it,
but I don't know how many people would have the patience to sit through it again.
