This is a remake the original 'bad lieutenant' staring the excellent Harvey Kietel and was a real good gritty bad cop movie, unfortunately this one starred the less than excellent Nick Cage who clunked his way through it in his usual pantomine, big eyed, over acting style! just about managed to stay with it till the end, another 2 hours of my life wasted!

  Trippy Cop Thriller

A Mean and Moody movie, not the normal sanitised stuff that comes out of Hollywood with Happy Endings and oodles of Sunshine.
The story is fairly straight forward following a Off the Hinges Cop on a case.
But it is all done with Flair and has some nice little Twists n Turns and is Funny in a Dark Twisted Way.
The film has a fair few surreal moments that dont make much sense, but thats what you get from a director like Werner Herzog, so its better to just go with it.
The cherry on the cake is the Amazingly Edgy performance by Nicolas Cage as an immoral Cop with some very dark shades of grey.
Eva Mendes is also very good in a small role.
Different kinda Cop movie which is worth watching for Nicolas Cage's performance alone.

I had read some rave comments/reviews about this film and Herzog is a great director. However this film didn't strike me as more than enjoyable. It has some good moments but overall I was underwhelmed. The curious thing is the quote on the box that say's 'disgracefully funny',I didn't find it much of a laugh fest.Another film with the same situation was Cold Souls, which although billed as a comedy I saw as more of a surreal drama although I really liked that.
Good for cage fans, better than Ghost Rider.

Cage gives a wonderfully unhinged performance that more than makes up for his recent foray into Bruckheimer kiddyfests.

Much more watchable than the original, on which this is extremely loosely based, it even manages to pull off a happy ending.

The perfomances are uniformly excellent, and Cage is definitely back to his best.

My only minor gripe is that there is no lenticular sleeve, as mentioned in the product description.

I enjoyed this film, it was funny and had a good story to it. I also love the artwork on the cover and the cast list was good too.

I would definitely watch this again, Cage is one of my favourite actors and he never seems to disappoint.

  THE FUTURE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT?

It's a tough one to review is this loose reamke of the cult 1992 original. To be honest i was not much of a fan of the 1992 original.
Nicholas Cage is outstanding as the corrupt, drug fueled Lieutenant as he has to deal with his addiction to pain killers, coke, gambling, loose women, his call girl girlfriend and the small matter of the cold blooded execution of a poor New Orleans family.
The film is shot in such a erratic fashion that matches Cages drug fueld unhinged performance perfectly, but in doing so the film has very little narrative, as Director Herzog all of a sudded takes the camera perspective of a road side Allicator or goes up close on a couple of lizards. The destruction of Hurricain Katrina blasted New Orleans is brilliantly and starkly shot, and does add to the films depth as most of the location looks like a warzone.
The major flaw in the film is the happy up beat ending that goes against the path of self destruction Cage's character was heading.
No doubt the movie needs a few watches to fully appreciate it,
but I don't know how many people would have the patience to sit through it again.

Its a good film based on Cage's perfomance but that was all there was,i have seen this all before in fact the Harvey Kietal Bad Lieutenant was better than this but very similar characthers even though not at all based on one another. If your a cage fan you will like it,its a slight improvement since Bangkok dangerous but not much else

THE ONLY CRIMINAL HE CANT CATCH IS HIMSELF!!!

This is the most weird movie i have ever seen but also quite brilliant too. Nic Cage plays a crooked cop who after an accident becomes hooked on drugs and betting large amounts on different sports events whilst trying to catch the people who killed an african family in the hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Cage's performance was off the hook and one of best in some time....not a film that everyone can appreciate but its a great ride if you can. Enjoy
