A scathing comedy satire of fashionistas and cut-throat corporate excess boasting a grandstanding central turn by Meryl Streep as the ultimate boss from Hell, The Devil Wears Prada is based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger who once worked as an assistant to real-life Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

In the dizzying world of New York fashion, where size zero is the new 2, six is the new 8, and a bad hair day can end a career, Runaway magazine is the Holy Grail. Overseen with a finely manicured fist by Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) - the most powerful woman in fashion - Runway is a fearsome gauntlet for anyone who wants to make it in the industry. To make Runway the fashion bible of New York and therefore the world, Miranda has let nothing stand in her way - including a long line of assistants that didn't make the cut. It's a job no self-respecting person can survive, yet it's an opportunity a million young women in New York would kill for.

A stint as Miranda's assistant could blast-open the doors for recent college graduate Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway). More college drab than haute couture, she stands alone among the small army of 'Clackers' on staff at Runway - superslim fashion divas clacking their stilettos down the halls of the magazine's Manhattan headquarters. But when Andy comes in for the job, it dawns on her that making it in this industry will take more than drive and determination. And her ultimate test stands before her in head-to-toe Prada. Miranda can spin the fashion world like a basketball but has a devil of a time finding and keeping a good assistant. Andy is completely wrong for the job. But she has something the rest of them don't: she refuses to fail.

To become the perfect assistant, Andy will need to make herself over in Miranda's image. Soon, much to her boyfriend's dismay, she can talk the talk, walk the walk and never again confuse Dolce with Gabbana. But the more of life she sees through Miranda's eyes, the more she begins to grasp that Miranda's world is a fabulous but lonely one - and that sometimes great success depends on great sacrifice. But at what cost?

Usual women hating women and clawing their way up the promotion and status ladder (well, it is American), but if you fancy a night in with a good bottle of plonk, a dvd and a chinese, then this is your basic girly chick-flick.Requires no concentration or effort, you can switch your head off but leave your eyes on and still understand it.If you prefer deeper, more fulfilling films, then avoid this like the plague.Overall though, it's not too bad, but I prefer the book.Alot more in the book than the film.

 Size 0 Satire, Great Performances

The problem with "The Devil Wears Prada" as a satire on the fashion industry lies in the casting of pencil-thin Anne Hathaway as outsider Andy. Reference is constantly being made to her character being large or overweight (for the industry) yet the truth is that Miss Hathaway is just as thin as everyone else in the cast, prompting the audience to ask what on earth are they talking about. When you also factor in that it takes no more than a quick trip to Wardrobe to get Miss Hathaway looking particularly glam, the end result is of a film that wants to be both a satire on and a celebration of the fashion industry. It doesn't work and looks like the producers want to have their cake and still remain a size 0.

Since the film fails as a critique, what we're left with is an absolutely venomous performance by Meryl Streep which is both hilarious and frightening. Indeed, Streep's turn deserves to go straight up there with Kevin Spacey in "Swimming with Sharks" as the ultimate boss from Hell. Perhaps they could be joined by Michael Douglas as Gordon Gecko in a new genre, Boss from Hell flics? Emily Blunt as catty wannabe Miranda is also very good and poor Miss Hathaway ends up coming in a poor third in the acting stakes. Maybe next time a role like this comes along she should take a leaf out of Robert De Niro's book and pile on a few pounds?

 Surprising!

This film wasn't quite what I was expecting.
I thought it was going to be constant laughs. Just a simple comedy.
But, it was alot more serious than that. And I don't mean in a bad way!
There was still plenty of laughs, but at the heart of it is a really well written story.

I can't compare to the book because I haven't read it yet, but I really enjoyed this film.
Anne Hatherway and Meryl Streep do a fantastic job.
A really great suporting cast too!

This DVD is packed with extras, so really good featurettes.
I definatly recommend this DVD!
