In 1994, writer-director Kevin Smith scored a surprise indie hit with the low-budget, black-and-white comedy Clerks, which won awards at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals and has attracted a growing cult audience over the years. Following such movies as Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma, Smith returns to his roots for Clerks II, a very funny, very raunchy sequel.

Ten years ago best friends Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) were New Jersey mini-mall clerks still slacking off together in their early 20s. A decade on a calamity at Dante and Randall's shops sends them looking for new horizons - but they ultimately settle at Mooby's, a Disney-McDonald's-style fast-food empire... While Dante prepares to move to Florida and marry Emma (Smith's real-life wife, Jennifer Schwalbach), Randal harasses geeky "Funployee of the Month" Elias (Trevor Fehrman), a dweeb who worships The Transformers and believes, much to Randal's consternation, that "The Lord Of The Rings is superior to Star Wars"!. Also back are Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith), who contribute their own warped world view of sex, drugs, and rock & roll.

The film features a string of cameos by familiar faces from other Smith films, including Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Walter Flanagan, and producer Scott Mosier, as well as Kevin Weisman (Alias), Ethan Suplee (My Name Is Earl), and Wanda Sykes (Curb Your Enthusiasm); and the excellent soundtrack ranges from Talking Heads and the Smashing Pumpkins to King Diamond and Smith vet Alanis Morissette. And beware the donkey!

 Smith's worst film to date

I love almost all of Smith's work. Infact everyhting that Ive seen such as his movies (even Jersey Girl), comic books and 'Evening With Kevin Smith' dvds Ive loved bar this sequel to his first movie 'Clerks'.

The ideas here are great. The premise that the characters havent really moved on to me is actually quite appealing.
My problem is the execution in te script. 'Clerks II' has a good story but unlike the original film is very short on laughs. It almost feels that had he spent more time on this that he could have pulled off a truly great sequel.

Another minor criticism is the casting of Rosario Dawson in this film. It's one of the most miscast roles that I've ever seen. I could never believe that this woman would work in a fastfood place or have the relationship with Dante that she does here.

Smith really shows that he may have lost his ambition to be the great filmmaker that he posesses the ability to be.

All the profanity; less than half the hilarity

Let's be honest, Clerks 2 doesn't get anywhere near the standard set by the Clerks. I'd only recommend this film if you are a fan of Kevin Smith, if you're not then this film really isn't worth the effort.

For Kevin Smith fans, however, this film does offer something, with several references and inside jokes relating to other films from the View Askewniverse.

This film has it's moments, an excellent dance number being one that springs to mind but is let down by the directors desire to shock to the detriment of any plot. Not even the misadventures of Jay and Silent Bob can save this film; relegated as they are to almost cameo roles by Smith.

 A suprisingly poignant re-union....

'Clerks' remains, to this day, one of the greatest independent movies of all time. So, much as I was a fan of Kevin Smith's other movies (except perhaps Jersey Girl) I was dubious when he announced this belated sequel. It just couldn't be anywhere near as good as the classic original, could it? Yes and no. Whilst certainly not quite as perfect as the original it also demonstrates how Smith has matured as both a filmmaker and a father. The same lewd, crude humour remains, Jay and Silent Bob are still as hilarious as ever, Randall still disrespects 90% of the customers and you'll never look at a donkey in the same way again. But 'Clerks 2' is also a very different film to its predecessor. Apart from being in colour it also shows a greater skill of directing on Kevin Smiths behalf, Rosario Dawson puts in a wonderful performance that is sure to have any sane male instantly falling in love with her and even Randall gets in touch with his feminine side. It is with these smaller, more heartfelt scenes that 'Clerks 2' really scores and results in a sequel that was actually worth the 10 year wait. The closing sequence is sure to leave a huge grin on the face of all 'Clerks' fans and a sincere hope that we might one day meet up again. A typically superb extras package only adds to a film that confounded all expectations to emerge a mature, sincere, intelligent and most of all worthy sequel to a comedy classic....

Not much has changed in the world of Clerks when this film starts, and not much has changed by the end. For this movie, Smith has thankfully decided to go for laughs rather than the dull relationship realism of his past couple of efforts. With a gag ratio much higher than the disappointing 'Jay & Silent Bob' this is his best work since 'Dogma'.

 A great return

This is a brilliant sequel where Kevin Smith has created a hilarious and surprisingly touching film, the perfect return to over the counter culture
