Sgt. Bilko: The Phil Silvers Show - 50th Anniversary Edition Box Set (3 Discs)

At first glance all you see is some old show with a guy called Phil Silvers who used to play Bilko, a loud-mouthed army sergeant who worked for himself rather than the army.

To an extent thats all true, but if you love comedy and have never given Bilko a chance, this is a perfect vehicle to use.

Very late for the DVD market to catch on that Bilko is worth the effort to put to disk, hopefully they will release them all on DVD soon.

Bilko could produce more belly laughs in one 25 min show than most new comedy shows can muster in an entire series. A huge cast of characters, all vying for the centre spot for the camera to see them and in the middle of this whirlwind is Phil Silvers himself, who to put it in his own words, Was born to play this part.

Funny, clever, charming, out right slapstick Bilko really did and still does have it all, give Bilko a chance and buy this collection, with some classic shows on this disk.

Frequently shown on BBC tv in the 1960's and 1970's and still as funny as ever - not dated because it deals in universal human nature and American production techniques eg moving cameras were literally years ahead of essentially static BBC methods - but not ITV ones because Lew Grade had imported technical people who had been blacklisted by US television and put them to work on the various 1950's (pseudo-) historical series using their accustomed US techniques. This dvd therefore gives excellent viewing on two levels, the tv history and secondly and most important - it's brilliantly funny.
