What does a scanner see?

A Scanner Darkly is set in suburban Orange County, California in a future where America has lost the war on drugs. When one reluctant undercover cop is ordered to start spying on his friends, he is launched on a paranoid journey into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode.

It is a cautionary tale of drug use based on the novel by Philip K. Dick and his own experiences. Like a graphic novel come to life, A Scanner Darkly uses live action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process (interpolated rotoscoping) to create a haunting, highly stylized vision of the future.

Dude... this movie is a trip. You have to meta-meta-think about it to get it. Not only do you have to watch the movie, you have to watch yourself watching the movie, and then analyze that. When you Finish, you'll feel like you're on drugs. And then you'll be paranoid as hell. I'd call this more of an experience than a movie..

A lesson in how to do Phillip K. Dick justice...

After Total Recall, Minority Report and Blade Runner (all fantastic movies mind) it seemed that Philip K. Dick adaptations were destined to be turned into nothing but Hollywood action flicks. Though enjoyable they did tend to only use the original source text as a jumping off point. A Scanner Darkly is the first film, in my opinion, to truly capture the true spirit of the original novel. Sure, that means it won't be for everyone, there is a lot of time spent with the characters chatting endlessly about bicycles, home security and drugs, but if you enjoyed the book I'm sure you'll love the movie. With a superb cast including the fantastic Robert Downey Jr. on top form and a quite unique visual style that only helps to add to the overall effect I'd recommend this movie to anyone who likes their movies to come with a healthy dollop of wit and intelligence.

Has the looks, lacks the substance

This is a average film. It has an odd storyline behind it, which some may find confusing. There are some good twists in the film, and some interesting ideas, but there does seem to be something missing. However, it is worth a look, if only for the graphic style in which it is done.

 Really enjoyable

I have to admit I had to watch this film a couple of times before I understood it. I wasn't too sure either on the "drawn style" of the film, but after a while I didn't really notice that at all. The film is everything a Philip K Dick interpretation should be and I'm sure most of that is down to director Richard Linklater. The acting is really good, especially Robert Downey Jnr. One I would definitely recommend.

 amazing movie expierence
