Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller's (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale.

So manly it gave my chest hair chest hair...

This is officially the manliest film EVER made. It's so manly, it comes with an additional Y chromosome, so that even girls who watch it can feel like men. It's so manly that it makes you beard sweat pure testosterone. It's like watching Chuck Norris' entire catalogue of films back to back while drinking whisky from the skull of your defeated enemy and making love to a beautiful woman for a week.

Seriously, it doesn't get manlier than this. If you watch this film, you will grow chest hair, a beard, and shout at everyone and everything your sheer joy at being a manly man, even if you're a woman.

If this film was a man he'd be the kind of man who washed down his ten bucket-sized shots of tequila with a petrol chaser, before eating the raw steak he cut from the back of the cow he carried on his back to the pub.

Is it a good film?

That is a question for lesser men.

Is it a sensible film?

That is a question for weaker men.

Is it worth watching?

That depends.

Are you a man? If you ARE a man, then the answer is yes. If not, the answer is STILL yes.

Discussions about whether Frank Miller's sociopathic comics make for good films, and whether it's gay or straight, is it homoerotic, why does this bit make no sense, why is the script so silly at times, why are they so very, very oiled....

All these discussions are irrelevant. All you need is a spear, 300 mates with chests made of iron and hearts so hard it's like they've been chiselled from diamonds, and a voice with two volume settings: shouty and bellowing.

300 is exactly what it looks like. You don't need a review to tell you if you'll like it. You already know if you will or not.

That's how manly it is.

Spectacular - a rare 5* film that deserves all the credit.

Fantastic visuals, great characters, awsome choreography, and a throbbing soundtrack make for one of the best films you are likely to see in a long time.

Expertly filmed, with a atmospheric bronze tint, cgi that you can barely notice, and heroes that you can relate to. This blows Sin City out of the water as Frank Miller adaptions go.

It appeals to both sexes - Lots of fighting and action for the guys, and lots of buff blokes in pants for the ladies. A bit bloody and gorey at times, but it's not over the top, or for the sake of it.

If you liked sin City - you'll love this.

 Gonna be a classic!

OK, so this isnt totally true to the actual story (as some reviewers have stated before) but who cares. Neither was Gladiator or any other 'historic' film. this film isnt even trying to tell the true story. its based on the comic, and that much is evident from the graphic action scenes, the beasts they battle and even the beautiful background. Its brillantly choregraphed and will keep people gripped to the edge of their seat. Unlike some reviewers who stated its predictable (please tell me 1 film that isnt), its based on a true story, of course its predictable-durr! i absolutley loved this film! A must buy and it will become a classic!

 Good-but not great.

I saw a trailer for 300 way before there was any hype for the movie and was gobsmacked. I hadnt the same anticipation for a feature since Empire Strikes Back as a kid so needless to say I was excited. On discovering that Zack Snyder was directing I was even more optimistic because his remake of Dawn of the Dead was an unexpected favourite of mine.
The opening is terrific-brooding, dark and visually spectacular. Events up until the first battle promise much and the political struggle back in Sparta echo the main storyline well.
When the opening battle is joined the movie reaches its pinnacle which is a shame as it never recovers from those glorious slow-motion moments. These have been criticised-but unfairly so. They mimic the fluid design of a graphic novel and the sequence is a high point in recent action cinema.
What ultimately keeps 300 from being great is the lack of interest invested by the audience in the other 299. Butler is dynamic, handsome, and ruthless and his death scene is glorious-but his men are all airbrushed (no)bodies. Who cares when they meet their demise? I wanted to-but I just couldnt. Watch the end of the Wild Bunch, Excalibur, or the Magnificent 7-thats how you should be feeling when a character dies-it should stir memories of losing a family member.
All that being said I will purchase it at some point because it is just to interesting a film to ignore. I think I was just gutted because I wanted it to be so good.

 A Must See

I have never given a film 5 stars, but this one I think deserves such an award. I think its obvious what sort of a film this is. As another reviewer mentioned earlier, this film plays to its strengths very well. Its the action that most of Snyder's budget went on, with any other scene merely a device to justify the epic battle sequences. The visuals are stunning thanks to the superb CGI, the sound effects and music are just simply awesome, and even the script shone in places- certainly the Spartan humour we see.The political history of the film is questionable, although because this battle occurred 2,487 years ago and the earliest record we have of this was written over 200 years after, I think we can forgive Synder for some of the films unrealistic dynamics- after all he is showing us Frank Millers vision of democracy and freedom, not giving a history lesson. I must point out that in terms of battle, what we see is historically spot on. Certain formations we see the Spartans form are real tactics- usually 500 men would make up a "Phalanx", whose formation could change to combat light infantry, heavy infantry, mounted units, heavy armoured units and defend from projectiles. The Spartans sheer force of will, toughness and political attitudes are spot on in this film. These were the hardest men in history, greater warriors even than the samurai, and this is portrayed fantastically.

All in all this is the best action film of this year, The DVD is well worth the money- the extras provide a valuble insight into this period and the hard work that went into creating this film.
We must not forget what these men did to keep alive the very morals we acknowledge today, and for that reason, it is everyone's duty to see this film.
