What a wonderful film that never fails to enthral as Gordon, a most devout follower of his own faith, opposes another, the Mahdi - the Chosen One, whose own zeal is portrayed with just as much righteous conviction and added vigour. Heston and Olivier show that each character believes in their respective 'chosen' right and destiny, building between them a stubborn mutual respect that finally culminates in ultimate tragedy for both, not helped by the ineffective bumbling and downright hesitancy of Gladstone's government. With stunning locations under the white glare of the Sudanese sun this really is an epic masterpiece to match the fictional (but not unrelated) Four Feathers.
