Winner of three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, including Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, Lee Daniels' Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome.
Set in Harlem in 1987, Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire is the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones, a sixteen year old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She's pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother, a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.
Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn't know the meaning of "alternative", but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms Rain, Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

This is one of the best demonstrations of story telling i have seen. It is hard to watch at times but worth the investment as you feel a rollercoster of emotions. The horror towards those that miss treat this special character and then the missunderstanding as the film flips you on your head to feel the pain of the monster as well as the victim. It is one of the very best films i've seen in terms of telling a story in a way that doesn't allow you to switch off for even a minute. Well done to the director (Daniels) and the leading lady (amazingly in her first ever acting role!). Please consider this film, it deserves the recognition.
As a 34 Year old action movie buff this film stopped me in my tracks, wonderfully acted, directed and produced. A tragic story told with grace, humour and honesty. The film was entertaining informative and above all easy to watch. A master class in film making that should not be ignored. Just excellent.
Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" By Sapphire is not the best technical film, the camera movements are quite shaky, which adds to the effect that you think you are watching a documentary. Mo'Nique is amazing in this film, you forget she is acting, just brilliant. Personally I think Gaby should have got the Oscar, because as much as a adore Sandra, I don't think her "Real Housewife" of Tennessee act was good enough. This film made me cry, is was a horror to me not a drama, its a very very good, and it will move you in away you have not been moved before,
