Review

Italian director Franco Zeffirelli stunned the world when he cast two young unknowns to portray the star crossed lovers in 'Romeo and Juliet', but it was a gamble that resulted in one of the most popular motion pictures of the time, winning international acclaim and two Academy Awards.

Shakespeare's classic romance comes to stunning visual life in a modern, young person's interpretation, bringing new vitality and a fresh insight to the most durable love story ever written.

I stumbled across this version after watching the 1996 DiCaprio/Danes film. I'm not normally a massive fan of Shakespeare, but I had found it to be an excellent, if somewhat unconventional, interpretation (though probably not the best for purists!)

Yet Zeffirelli's 1968 film surpasses its later counterpart in almost every respect. Whiting and Hussey are adorable in the title roles - a true "pair of star-cross'd lovers." What's more, by casting two teenagers (17 and 16 respectively), Zeffirelli makes their young romance utterly believable. It is visually stunning, relentlessly emotive and truly beautiful. This is, without doubt, a five-star film - the definitive production of a timeless classic.

although i like the latest version this one is excellent and in some ways better, as it portrays the story much closer to the script.
