The second series of 'Red Dwarf' continued to build on the brilliant premise of the show adding new characters (the first appearance of Kryten albeit it portayed by a different actor) and fully exploiting the sci-fi credentials of the show. THe final episode, especially, allowed the writers to play with female counterparts to the ships crew (as well as end the series on a hilarious cliffhanger) but every single episode was well-crafted and full of instantly quotable dialogue. The DVD is, again, wonderfully put together with all the snazzy menus, deleted scenes and so forth of the previous release plus a chance to catch the full uncut version of the suprisingly catchy 'Tongue Tied' (When I saw you for the first time/My knees began to quiver/And I got a funny feeling/In my kidneys and my liver) Another superb release for a fantastic show and still such wonders to come...

stronger second outing for the crimson short one

The episodes on offer in the second season double DVD release are I believe generally considered to be a much more satisfying collection that the previous year (e.g. classics like the fantasy existence the crew enjoy in "Better Than Life" and seeing possible alternate futures in "Stasis Leak") and again the first disc benefits from having, alongside this sextet of stories, a hidden Easter egg feature. If you move down from the subtitles option to the watch on the table and click on it this will take you to the 'Holly Hop Drive' box. Clicking on the start button will activate a 2 ½ min 'talking heads' extra covering the making of fifth episode "Queeg". Disc Two's 'bonus features' still seem a tad light and anyone who saw the special BBC2 night devoted to the show will be familiar with the contents of the 30 min "Red Dwarf A-Z" documentary which is on offer here. Again we have the usual "Smeg Ups" (6 ½ mins), Deleted Scenes (approx 18 mins), 21 image Photo Gallery, welcome themed collage of series sequences (this one an approx 3 min feature around the premise 'Alternate Personalities') and twelve page 'collector's booklet' as well as a 30 sec original series two trailer, audio book clips and music cues. Unique to this title there is an approx 17 min interview with series co-creator Doug Naylor and most welcome an uncut 3 ½ min version of the hilarious, pleasingly catchy "Tongue Tied" song as featured in the opening moments of season finale "Parallel Universe". Certainly a mild improvement on the previous season 2 disc set despite offering basically the same amount of content.

In my opinion this has to be one of the best series of Red Dwarf because of the exciting episodes. Kryten, Better than Life and Queeg are my 3 favourite episodes of this series. I highly recommend this series to any Red Dwarf fanatic.
