H G Wells' War of the Worlds has been one of my favourite books since I was a child and Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds has been one of my favourite albums since I was a teenager. The music takes a hold on the emotions and control of the imagination from those first powerful notes. It's a trip. Now this stage version, conducted by Jeff Wayne himself, adds a glorious, dramatic visual dimension to a musical version of the sci-fi classic, that already rocked. I was prepared to be sad about the absence of Richard Burton, Phil Lynott, Julie Covington and David Essex, but it still has Justin Hayward and Chris Thompson. The Burton 'talking head' is pretty spooky and adds a certain something. The new kids, Alexis James, Tara Blaise and Russell Watson are excellent replacements for their excellent predecessors. Great performances all round. The Martian tripods look absolutely authentic. The film, the light show (which I think even Pink Floyd could have been proud of), the orchestra, the actors/singers and the audience all generate the most wonderful atmosphere of energy and enthusiasm. I wish I could have been there. Brilliant show!
This is a fantastic live performance of the legendary musical of The War of the Worlds. This is as near perfect as it is possible to get. Having grown up listening to the album on a regular basis it is fantastic to be able to see thsi realisation of the show for the first time ever. The music is more powerful than on the album, the light show fantastic and the little surprises that appear here and there make this so much more than just a concert. This is theatre! Thankfully Wayne realised that he had to find a way for Richard Burton to play apart despite having died in 1984 and the realisation of this is a stroke of genius for it would not be the same without him. I recommend it to you all.
Whether you've seen the show live on stage or not this is a must have if you like the original album.
If you've seen the show then great! But this DVD will get you 'up close and personal' with the band/orchestra/performers in a way that most seats at the live show just can't do.
Not seen the show live? No problem, enjoy this time and time again for less than a fiver, it's worth much more than that.
Enjoy!
