This was the first movie I ever watched, and it is my absolute personal favourite movie! Unbelievably well done! Richard Donner is the perfect director, and I love him for this movie. Christopher Reeve (RIP) is perfectly cast and Gene Hackman gives one of his finest performances. But the absolute best thing about this film is the score by John Williams. As soon as you hear it, you will believe that you can fly, and I'm not kidding on that one! Much better and bigger than Star Wars. Consider this. Star Wars began with a budget of $10 million and ended up spending more than $30 million. Superman began production with $40 million and ended up spending $120 million! And they were both the two massive hits of the seventies! Superman II is just as good as this one, even without John Williams and Richard Donner (and that's saying something), but the last two in the original series went so downhill it was unbelievable! The film is in a class of it's own, and now is a very poingnant reminder of what a tallent the late great Christopher Reeve had at bringing the man of steel to the big screen, as he perfectly balances the awkwardness of Clarke Kent with the invincible man of steel.
Gene Hackman is oustanding as Lex Luthor, both showing perfect comic timing and hidden manace.
But it's the emotional punch the film has with the romantic aspects of the film between Louis Lane and Superman, that really hits home, and the final sequence of the earth quake and Superman turning back time is just comic book magic.
