Brilliant "Prequel" to the Naked Gun Trilogy

| | See all DavidWellens's reviews (8)

In 1988, Leslie Nielsen starred in "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad". As its title indicates, the film had a predecessor. The original series, called "Police Squad", lasted only 6 episodes, before being cancelled.
As many will agree, the series, and its brilliant humour, were ahead of its time, and were lost to many. After the first film was released, the ratings, and reviews, soared sky high, leaving people to wonder what they had missed.
"Police Squad: The Complete Series" brings together many of the humorous dialogues and background gags that the public had come accustomed to through the Naked Gun trilogy.
As stated by others, the series require multiple viewings to catch all the gags, and will no doubt have you laugh yourself in half, time after time again. Because just like the film trilogy, the gags never get old. Never.

I used to watch this show when i was younger and when i seen it at this price i couldn't resist it, i wasn't dissapointed, its an absolute classic and any fan of comedy will enjoy it, i wish they had included the sequence filmed with john belushi in the extras that would have made it fantastic. SPOILER ALERT..... Look out for David Schwimmer (of friends fame) and Anthony Edwards (goose from top gun) as dental patients in the first episode

I wasn't around at the time that series was made or aired, but was introduced to it via Paramount Comedy 1 after I had seen all three of the Naked Gun films (which follow on from the series) on the core TV channels. It is truly a shame that bad ratings caused this show to be axed as it is so funny and the parodies police shows of the time and the general stupidity of people very well. Leslie Nielsen is fantastic as deadbeat cop Frank Drebin - Detective Lieutenant Police Squad who is always getting into silly situations it beggars belief. The other actors are also very good in this series - it must have been hard not to crack a smile during production as the jokes are simple, but very clever and very effective - much more so than the toilet humour and the silly or sexual orientated humour we get now-a-days. This is truly where the entire classic spoofs (Naked Gun, Airplane! Hot Shots! etc) came from and apparently it slightly inspired Matt Groening when he was creating The Simpsons, and to be fair that is what this show appears to be like - but better - Frank Drebin is certainly the Homer Simpson of this series. It is just a shame that it didn't at least get a second series or have more episodes within this one - 6 is not enough!! That said the films that followed (The Naked Gun 1-3) were just as funny and clever and all of them are worth a buy, but be sure that once you have bought it and play it that you don't look away as it is likely that if you do then you will miss a joke.

  Too ahead of it's time

In a way, it was cancelled due to bad ratings. This is a show with an extreme amount of jokes. Nielsen is great at deadpan delivery as he was with Airplane and Naked Gun.

It parodises everything about cop shows and a good chunk of other TV shows to great effect. Sure it's only six episodes, it is a bargain. It shows it's age to a degree, however is a damn sight better written than most shows on TV nowadays
