The Night He Came Home

Perhaps the most influential and successful independent film ever made, Halloween is the movie that put director John Carpenter on the map as a viable filmmaker. An exercise in simple, pure horror, Halloween takes us into the world of a mad killer, Michael Myers, who at a very young age stabbed his older sister to death. Locked away for many years in a mental hospital Michael escapes one night and returns to his home to continue his killing spree. Jamie Lee Curtis, in her first role, plays the resourceful babysitter who is chased by the killer on Halloween night. Produced for very little money and a tight shooting schedule, Halloween was a stunning success when it was released. Written by John Carpenter and his longtime producer Debra Hill, the film set both their careers on fire, with both of them working together many times over the next 25 years. The film also made a star out of Jamie Lee Curtis and turned the slasher movie into a viable, successful genre.

Halloween has been copied, parodied and even turned into a franchise of its own, but the original is still considered the best of the bunch. Halloween was John Carpenter's first foray into horror, and remains the standard to which all other modern horror films are measured.

 Classic Carpenter.

Even mediocre Carpenter is interesting but Halloween is up there with The Thing and Escape From New York. From the steadicam opening and its crane shot reveal of Michael; Carpenter sets the framework for the modern day slasher movie.

A must see for any horror fan

Possibly the greatest horror film ever made, very few manage to convey the level of fear and suspense that John Carpenter achieves. This is because the film delivers on every single level. For a start the directing is exceptional, it is Carpenters attention to detail which makes this a master class in directing. Lingering shots, swooping cameras and use of colour really shine out in bleakness of its subject matter. The soundtrack is also a haunting dirge of eerie and memorable tunes which sets the scene for a night of terror. John Carpenter shows us that he is a master of sound as well as vision as he wrote the music himself.

Then there is the Shape himself, an emotionless shell of a man whose face is hidden behind a corpse white mask. Only the eyes are visible and the convey a hidden evil. The effective use of the shape, seen in the background or through a window, or coming out from the place you least expect really emphasis how well John Carpenter knows how to scare his audience. It is the ghostly, emotionless look of the mask which will burn into your psyche long after you've watched the film and the 'is he there or not' moments will have your adrenaline pumping.

How important is this film, well it pretty much defined the horror genre of that era and became synonymous with, and pretty much made, the term Slasher film. In fact after it was released many followed suit and tried to recapture the magic and not surprisingly most failed. Only Friday 13th really shone out as being comparable.

Without doubt a must for horror fans and a film that will live on as being a true classic.

 A Classic Masterpiece

The most classic of all time, John Carpenter and no idea what he was getting himself into when he decided to make this with him then time girlfriend/Producer Debra Hill.

Acting - Great debut from Jamie Lee Cutis, with her parents we all know she was destined to be a star. Tremendous appearance from Donald Pleasence. Also good supporting roles from P.J Soles and Nancy Loomis.

Story - Michael Myers escapes from a mental institution, one night he decides to go trick ot treating on Halloween but not after candy after 17 year old girls with a butcher knife.

John Carpenter has done some great work such as the fog, the thing, vampires but no one not even himself can beat the masterpiece that is Halloween

 THE MUST SEE HORROR FILM

The greatest horror film of all time! Scary, suspenseful, and viscerally thrilling, simply said Halloween set the standard for every modern horror film that has followed it.

Pleasence is great in what was probably the definitive role of his career; Jamie Lee Curtis, in her motion picture debut, became a bona fide scream queen after acting in "Halloween" as well as a few subsequent slasher pictures, and she is an intended victim worth rooting for.

Its fantastic, John Carpenters finest hour!

The best there is, was or ever will be!

Halloween is undoubtedly the best horror film ever made, period. It speaks volumes that we still watch this film 29 years after its' making.

The original, and best, Michael Myers installment sees Haddonfield, Illenois turned from a friendly small American town into the site of a massacre of epic proportion as Myers breaks free from his incarceration at a mental institution for his return home.

Myers, incarcerated as a child for the murder of his older sister, returns and plagues the life of Lori (Jamie Lee Curtis) culminating in the Haddonfield massacre on Halloween.

A must have for any serious horror buff, especially on the verge of an imminent remake, Halloween has come a long way since the silver painted William Shatner masks of 1978.
