Bubba Ho-Tep maybe the quirkiest film in years; Elvis and a black JFK battle a soul sucking mummy in a Texas rest home. Yet as high concept as this sounds it is actually a warm tale of redemption, self-worth, and dignity. The music is stirring lifting the ridiculous image of a zimmer frame Elvis patnering the wheel chair bound JFK to the heroic. Bruce Campbell plays the King with an increasingly vibrant performance as he rediscovers his mojo and director Coscarelli helms with a twisted glee-just as you would expect from the maker of the Phantasm movies.

It is interesting to look at "Bubba Ho-Tep" as the peak of cinematic skill for director Don Coscarelli, who made his debut with the cult classic "Phantasm"; and Bruce Campbell, who earned his bearings as survivalist Ash in "Evil Dead." This macabre fable, inspired by a Joe R. Lansdale short story, involves a revived Egyptian king who begins preying on the residents of a rest home by sucking out their souls through a certain orifice; it is up to an aging Elvis (Campbell, in an amazing comic performance) and a black "JFK" (Ossie Davis, camping it up) to put an end to the mummified menace. While most of the film's comic energy is contained within the first hour, Coscarelli supports the remainder with an assured visual style, including some fine makeup effects. While extremely offbeat, "Bubba Ho-Tep" is a joy to watch, and certainly a cut above most horror fare coming out these days.

Cult Classic, well Worth Checking out!

This film is very good, pretty quirky and funny and not the normal type of horror film you will see. Im doing this review mainly for the extra's as some people might not know what they are.

I got this for €4.99 and its a bargain. Just so people know its the Double Disc edition thats for €4.99 and the second disc is full of extras.
In order:
Joe Landsdale Reads from bubba ho tep (7:25)
A bit funny, worth a look at least, its a guy narrating a story over still pictures.

Then theres a few chapters of a sort of making of/documentary movie (45:59)
Lots in it, pretty long, an interesting making of how they did the make up, sound effects and such.

I advise buying getting this as I loved it, but it could be a bit of a love-hate film.

 Cult Classic!

I totally love this film. Elvis is alive and living in an east texas rest home! Brilliant. Great dialouge, helarious stuff. First class movie. Orginal with excellent acting from all the cast. Brilliant! "Cleopatra does the nasty!"

 Not Bruce at Best!

I'm a HUGE fan of Bruce Campbell, the guy is comical, a genius! unfortunately Bubba Ho-Tep fails to satisfy on most levels. I had high hopes for this, a film which centers around 'elvis' combining it with a mummy had to be entertaining. Alas I was mistaken, the film is a little slapdash, all attempts at humour seem very forced and it wasn't long before my interest began to wain.. By the end of the film I'd lost all attachment to the characters and the conclusion didn't really interest me (though I did sit it out until the end) I can't recommend this, as much as I'd love to, not even to die hard Bruce fans.. Rent it first.
