'The Beiderbecke Collection' is a charming mix of comedy and drama that has all the hallmarks of a classic detective thriller.

Follow the exploits of jazz fan Trevor and his long-suffering girlfriend Jill as they find themselves embroiled in various mysteries which follow them to Amsterdam and Edinburgh and include dodgy businessmen, black economies, refugees and much much more....

'The Beiderbecke Affair' (1984) - Follow the exploits of Jazz nut Trevor Chaplin (James Bolam), and his long-suffering girlfriend Jill Swinburne (Barbara Flynn). Whilst trying to track down a set of missing records they encounter a mystery platinum blonde who weaves a complex web of intrigue that soon escalates to dealing with dodgy businessmen, 'black economies' and council corruption.

'The Beiderbecke Tapes' (1987) - Feature length mystery with Trevor and Jill as they continue to embroil themselves in all sorts of clandestine meetings and intrigue. Nuclear waste in the Yorkshire Dales, sinister conversations and a missing barman take Trevor and Jill on a whirlwind mystery from the Dales to Amsterdam and Edinburgh.

'The Beiderbecke Connection' (1988) - Trevor and Jill are now parents to a baby boy, however their old pals Big Al and Little Norm prevail upon them to give sanctuary to a homeless refugee. It is not long however before they are again caught up in a complex deception of a musical kind featuring the music of jazz supremo Frank Ricotti.

Hot, cool and what time does the tune start"

Sheer genius from Alan Plater. When mild-mannered woodwork teacher Trevor Chaplin buys a set of Bix Beiderbecke records from a mysterious platinum blonde he and English teacher Jill Swinburne are drawn into the mysterious world of the White Economy, Big Al and Little Norm, Sergeant Hobson (BA) and The Man With The Dog. James Bolam and Barbara Flynn are perfectly cast, virtually every line is funny, the supporting characters are equally well cast and played and even the camerawork has an eye for quirky details. And there's Frank Ricotti's superb score. TV has never been better than this. Picture and sound are quite poor especially in the first series but restorethe ad break titles missing from other issues, extras are some archive interviews, stills and publicity material, a CD of the music, a very well written booklet and the 1981 four part series Get Lost with Alun Armstrong and Bridget Turner as very similar characters. Even with the poor picture quality this box is a must buy

Absolute belting series which I remember first time round!
Have watched it hundreds of times and it only gets better each time, great comfort viewing, highly recommended!
Buy this and treasure it, full of fabulous performances, pathos, black comedy and just life as was in the eighties.
Enjoy! Favourite phrases 'what time does the tune start?' and 'his music sounded like bullets shot from a bell' SHEER BRILLIANCE! Big Al and Little Norm Rule!

Fabulous insight into the small petty world of councils, police & comprehensive school system during the Thatcher years with a great sound track even if your not a jazz fan.Very dry witt.

 Excellent buy

Really good series. Sound quality poor on Beiderbecke Affair though so 4 not 5 stars. Would recommend watching GET LOST first as it is a sort of prequelle filmed ealier but still set in a school, actors and character names different. Found myself listening to the CD on the way to work and checking the mirror for white undecover police cars, may be I got carried away a bit!!!
