An utterly wild comedy epic directed by Steven Spielberg and nominated for three Academy Awards®. Lavish effects sequences highlight this hilarious, all star extravaganza set in Los Angeles just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when fear of a Japanese Invasion threw the city into a state of Pandemonium.

Screwball characters run wild on Hollywood Boulevard as manic servicemen, zealous store owners, teary-eyed girls and bickering Nazis are thrown together in this fast-rising comic soufflé that even features a sendup of Spielberg's own Jaws opening.

On reflection of this movie, it now seems that the critics had already made their minds up about the film without even seeing it, and was just desperate to see Spielberg fall after his home run of Jaws and Close Encounters. The film was panned on it's release way back in 1979, many Spielberg fans chose to forget this movie ever was made.
But that was way back then. Looking at the movie now, the film seems that it was way ahead of it's time and has much to relish. The action and dance sequences are amazing, the star line up of comedy legends is brilliant, the minature effects are better than most of the CGI that can be done today, and even John Williams music score is yet again first class, but the film does have some faults. Although Spielberg is well at home dealing with the lavish action sequences, he is the wrong man for comedy, as some of the gags are to obviouse and seem shoe horned in. It seems that given another director, these gags could have been better. The movie is loud....very loud, and nobody talks, they just shout, but these niggles are forgotton when you see the spectacle of it all, and it's obviouse to see where all the budget went.
It may not be the comedy classic as intended, but it's still great fun, and if your a fan of The Blues Brothers, Animal House and Stripes, you'll lap up every crazy minute.
Well worth re-watching.
