  Gritty war film

This is a great war film- atmospheric and gritty with a great performance from Jack Palance . Eddie Albert (who plays the dangerously incompatant and coweredly Captain Coony)steals the show. Lee Marvin in my opinion struggles a bit in his role as the corrupt General with family connections to the Captain. This a much under rated film, and I know a few people who have never heard of it but its well worth a watch.

This brutal and grimly realistic war drama was a precursor to the likes of "Saving Private Ryan","Platoon" & "Full Metal Jacket" in that it showed war really is hell and men are easily expendable from corrupt moribund so-called superiors.

It's a great shame that Jack Palance never got terrific roles like this again because he is superb as the wise, battleworn, cynical soldier that can see through all the hpocrisy.
