Directed by David Cronenberg and adapted for the screen by Patrick McGrath, Spider is a powerful psychological thriller that stars Ralph Fiennes as Spider, a strange and lonely man. After a long period in a mental institution - the result of a traumatic childhood - he returns to the streets of the East End of London where he grew up. The sights, sounds and the smells of those streets begin to awaken the deeply buried memories of his childhood.
At the centre of these memories is the great trauma of losing his mother (Miranda Richardson), a trauma which occurred, he believes, because his plumber father, Bill Cleg, (Gabriel Byrne), murdered her in order to move a prostitute into the house in her place. As Spider claws through the falsehoods he has woven around himself, he begins to arrive at the truth about his life and about his mother’s death. The truth, which will take him to the very limits of his faltering sanity.

What an incredible film by one of the best directors around! Dark and disturbing, I was mesmerised by an all star cast, topped by a fantastic performance by Ralph Fiennes as spider. The film centres around Spider, who has recently been released from a mental assylum, and weaves it's web of intricate mystery through a series of semi flashbacks and nightnarish visions. Without giving to much away, it's a test of one mans will to cling on to what sanity he has left in the face of the emerging truths about his past. Brilliant!
Fantastic - a must see!

God bless Miranda Richardson! One of Cronenberg's best offerings - well worth every penny. I was completely glued to the screen - script was exciting, dark, surprising! Loved every minute!
