So what is this fascination people have with CSi? With 2 further spin off shows based in Miami and NY, the original follows the Las Vega Crime Lab as they "follow the evidence" and invariably [but not always] catch the perp...

The lead character is Gil Grissom [William Peterson - who of you remembers him as the lead FBI agent from the film Manhunter??] and he soon becomes the Supervisor of the night shift. He's actually quite difficult to "love" as a principal character in the way that you do with say, Jack Bauer in 24. With his specialist subject being Entemology, I find in the early seasons some of his "endearing" comments about bugs a bit geeky rather than genius. BUT in all fairness they are invariably rubbish puns that set-up the opening title sequence with the banging theme tune... lol

But all that is fine with me and in no way ruins the show, due to the great leading cast. This includes my favourite, the exceptionally sexy Catherine Willows [Marg Helgenberger] who prgresses in the last season of this box set to ... well... I don't want to give anything away when you should be buying it......

Each and every episode sees at least one crime being investigated by the team. The exception to this is in a couple of penultimate season finales where they go for the suspense effect to bind you over. I have to admit, even writing this now, it seems that you may get bored of the samey-ness by season 3 but the cast and plots really DO keep you glued and wanting more!

The show has EXCELLENT special effects, sometimes stomach turning but always realistic and never, NEVER leaving reality and entering the realms of Sci-Fi.

Every episode is broken up at least once by a moody musical montage. This is usually of one of the cast splashing something from a pipette into a test tube and looking at it meaningfully..... or flashing a torch at something on a wall at a crime scene.... all very artisitc...... the music is great though, even a bit of Athlete appears in one episode and the Kooks crop up in another....

The only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 is because of the following:

I like a TV Show to be a serial that develops. CSi doesn't develop enough for me. There are a lot of plotlines between characters that get touched on then forgotten about. That's not to say they're not fun when they happen, but I like some follow through!

One example off the top of my head - without ruining it for potential buyers - is where Nick Stokes [played by the chisel jawed George Eads] gets made a CSi level 3 - Lead investigator - in Season 4.... that's the LAST we hear about it! Just a bit of half hearted bitching from the wonky mouthed Sarah Sidle [played by Jorja Fox - I imagine the geek squad love her] and the whole thing is forgotten about....

THAT is my main problem with CSI, shows like this should reward regular viewers and fans with a bit of character progression... but then I suppose in this case it is testament to how great the writing and plotlines are in CSI to not need it?
