Resident Evil does a great job of moving a lot of the less interesting elements of the story along very quickly resulting in more action and more bag for your buck... literally. This film definitely will not win an Academy Award, it will not even be considered and I'm not saying it should be but it is important that we respect these kinds of films just as the others. They provide some fundamental basic necessities us moviegoers need; escapism, fantasy and entertainment. I really enjoyed this film, its slick and provides for a few genuine 'boo' moments. The film contains some really cool and well implemented special effects but does not fall into the trap of overusing them, the soundtrack is heavy and again ties in well with the scenes it is used with, the soundtrack itself is headed with the main theme by Marylin Manson, some very memorable kill scenes such as the 'zombie dogs' and 'laser light' another positive aspect of this film is it allows for teen and the older perverts to gawp at the incredibly beautiful Milla Jovovich in a very cool outfit.
Watchers of the film are heavily rewarded at the films somewhat cliff-hangerish ending with a very surprising, unpredictable and dare I say satisfying 'freeze-frame' type of nude scene by the one and only Jovovich, although admittedly disappointing for viewers who have already mentally undressed her at this point...
The downside? If you're looking for a super-intensive and immersing narrative that guides the characters on a journey of self-discovery and adventure, you will not find this here. Some of the characters are a little one dimensional and obvious in their motivations having said that the two kick-ass females make up for, in this films case, minor downsides... Overall Anderson's Sci-fi, horror, action adventure film is a success on many counts.
Fans of the game on the whole should be pleased with a very pleasing adaptation, the zombies are present, the zombie dogs are present, eerie atmosphere with occasionally 'jumpy' moments are here and some of Resident Evils in game camera angles are present. I have played the game and personally the only ting the game fans should be disappointed about is that they're not playing it.
So to conclude a very entertaining film with some surprise and memorable moments, decent story that moves well with haste and a proportionate amount of action and Milla Jovovich! Well recommended for fans of the above mentioned genres and virgins to the resident evil, which is sure to continue into at least a trilogy.
