This is an excellent film, the design of the ship is really good. I always imagined the Imperial Ships of Warhammer 40000 to be like this inside with the massive open spaces and large windows.

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

This is a post Star Wars sci-fi for kids romp where Disney saw a bandwagon going by and decided to leap on it, and it almost works, but someone at Disney just didn't quite get what sci-fi was and decided to do a live action cartoon style fantasy set in space, and I think that's why it's been pretty much forgotten about.

It should work, it has good effects, it has great robots, it has BIIIG set pieces and loads of stuff that hovers and explodes, all future movies should have stuff that hovers and explodes, BUT it kind of forgot to add a decent script that aims a little higher brow than an 11 year old's requirements.

The robots are a bit too cute and cartoony, the action is just a little too Flash Gordon, they seem to have decided they can forget about the laws of physics whenever they like (weightlessness comes and goes arbitrarily and some space has breathable air!), which in any kind of sci-fi, even one for kids, is pretty much always inexcusable, and the overall feel is completely disjointed, it's silly and fun here, it has some adult moral concepts there, it insults every adult's intelligence on science matters, THEN it tries for a 2001 style deep cerebral ending.

However, it's distracting and fun, has some very cool visuals and set pieces, and for kids it's great, I loved it as a child and was totally sold, it's just little too silly for older teens or adults, although I still love the evil robot Maximillian and it goes down fine at inebriated gatherings (with occasional mass groans).

Cautiously recommended, if you liked Lost In Space you might like this.

I first watched The Black Hole when I was 11, and now more the 20 years later I still remember it with fondness.
Black Hole has excellent effects and a memorable story whish even includes a mad scientist and a killer robot.
It introduces lots of 'Good' science too, but lets face it almost no SciFi movie have taken into accounts time dialtione effect and few books too (a good example is Forever War). When talking the science of Black Holes this film does a good job.
The films has excellent characters, some pretty funny one liners and great animated pre-cgi effects that stand up well even today and give the movie a distinctive look.
This a a good movie for the Kids, prehaps too scary for the very young. If you need a nostalic fix this does the job too. Only down side are the lack of extras on the DVD.
