I saw this on the television broadcast and it exceeded all of my expectations. I was a bit apprehensive about Tennant as Hamlet, but he was phenomenal. He understood the role perfectly, showing the prince as being tormented and grief-stricken, yet honest and loving. Patrick Stewart was, naturally flawless. Edward Bennet as Laertes was disappointing; I felt his acting was wooden and forced, and it just didn't seem real too me.
I was disappointed by the fact that they switched between acts and scenes, often missing whole chunks of the play, even deciding to elminate entire sections of Hamlet's soliloquies. But otherwise, the adaptation was breathtaking. Tennant had me in tears more than once!
