A Fresh Spin on the Romantic Comedy Genre

| | See all deanlowdon's reviews (348)

Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the lovely Zooey Deschanel (500) Days of Summer manages to breath fresh life into the cliched romantic comedy genre. Told in non-chronological order each scene begins on a different day of the relationship. Jumping from their happiest moments to times of despair makes for a fascinating watch despite the fact that we learn right from the start of the film how things will eventually turn out.

Unusually told from the male leads perspective (500) Days of Summer also maintains a healthy sense of humour throughout, even during some of the movies darker moments, and this largely prevents it from becoming over sentimental in the way other romantic movies have been prone to do. It is all too easy to dismiss this type of movie out of hand but this is certainly offers something just a little bit different.

One of the greatest films of all time

This is truely one of the greatest films of all time. It's a film where you can look at it and be either the Tom or Summer role in the film, It's a film where anyone can watch it and think I have been there... it's like looking into my life... This is just all around a brilliant film, I also have recommend this to some friends of mine and they all thought it was a brilliant films to.
Also the people who have bad mouthed the film lack intelligence, so just ignore them.

 95 minutes of perfection.

A wonderfully observed, written and directed romantic comedy about Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel) who meet, and then have a relationship that spans.......well, you can probably about guess from the title!!

So far, so standard rom-con you may think, but not so here. With a feeling of freshness not often seen in the cinema this is a true gem with a few differences that enhance the film from the norm. The first difference is here it's the guy who wants to be serious pretty quickly, not the girl! Then there's the brilliantly executed non-linear structure as we go back and forth between the highs and lows of Tom and Summer's relationship and a superbly witty script, delivered by two people who actually have great chemistry and this is a little rom-com that really does put many others into the shade.

Once you also chuck in a neat and perfectly chosen varied soundtrack, and a current bargain price then what you have is a refreshingly new spin on a very old genre.

 Not Your Typical Rom-Com

500 Days of Summer is excellent. I'm a great fan of Zooey Deschanel, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and they worked so well together. This is not your typical romantic comedy. It's edgy, quirky, witty and fun. As a guy, I can safely say it's not just one for the girls. Most guys will enjoy this too. Definitely watch this if you've got time to spare.

 Brilliant film

Sad, funny and ultimately a very human film. Relating to the characters is easy, and the Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt have a fantastic on-screen chemistry. Well worth buying even if you are not a fan of the genre

It's like a males version of a Romantic. It's put together very well and the acting is spot on too. I certainly enjoyed it from start to finish and recommend it highly.

Hopefully they do a 500 days of Autumn too, but not sure how it would work. I'm sure they can do it though.

500 DAYS OF SUMMER & 1 DAY OF AUTUMN!

What happens when boy falls for girl, but girl doesnt fall for boy? This is the cliched subject matter in this brilliantly crafted and very different romcom in which Tom Hansen (Josepth Gordon-Levitt) meets Summer Finn (the beautiful Zooey Deschanel) and embarks on a 500 day romance with her until things take a turn for the worst and both are left to wonder whether true love really exists.

While the plot for the film is standard romcom material that has been done numerous times before, it is the presentation of this story that makes the film watchable as its non-linear approach to showing snipets from the pairs romance (jumping backwards and forwards between moments during the 500 days) keeps the viewer both interested and concentrating, piecing the pieces together just as the couple themselves are doing on screen. As the leads, both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are likable, engaging and funny while the production values are different in a good way featuring some strong talent from Marc Webb and the fantastic song Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap.

As well as this the script is also naturally funny thanks to some class writing by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber instead of falling for the rather overdone humour of the traditional romantic comedy, thus this gives the film a very fresh appeal. Finally the ending to the film is both bittersweet and somewhat happy which makes a nice change from the happily ever after of most films of this genre. In all, Im not usually a big fan of this sort of film, there are a few odd execeptions that I will watch but overall I tend to find most of them very samey. 500 Days Of Summer however, is one of the films that is an exception to this. The film is very well acted, generally funny, well put together and very different to films with a simular type of story and on the plus side its more than suitable for us blokes to watch!

A Love Story Men Can Enjoy To, For The Modern Generation

Perfectly cast with Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel, this film shows you the points in the relationship where things went wrong and went right (not in order though, so you can see it happening), hits you emotionally at just the right times as well as your funny bones, an excellent film with also the hardest part to a film, an excellent ending.

 AMAZING!!

The only real reason i bought this film was because i love zooey Deschanel but this has turned out to be one of my favourite films! This is not your typical rom-com! Some funny moments and some emotional moments. The chemistry between the two lead characters is very good and works perfectly. All in all a must see film!

Clever twist on your typical rom-com movie.

I really enjoyed this film. Light hearted, funny, and although its a bit of a chick flick I don't think its too 'girly'. The theme of flicking through the days in a random order gives it a original feel despite being a rom com. Its not too typical. Definately going to buy it after writing this!
