What happens when boy falls for girl, but girl doesnt fall for boy? This is the cliched subject matter in this brilliantly crafted and very different romcom in which Tom Hansen (Josepth Gordon-Levitt) meets Summer Finn (the beautiful Zooey Deschanel) and embarks on a 500 day romance with her until things take a turn for the worst and both are left to wonder whether true love really exists.
While the plot for the film is standard romcom material that has been done numerous times before, it is the presentation of this story that makes the film watchable as its non-linear approach to showing snipets from the pairs romance (jumping backwards and forwards between moments during the 500 days) keeps the viewer both interested and concentrating, piecing the pieces together just as the couple themselves are doing on screen. As the leads, both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are likable, engaging and funny while the production values are different in a good way featuring some strong talent from Marc Webb and the fantastic song Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap.
As well as this the script is also naturally funny thanks to some class writing by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber instead of falling for the rather overdone humour of the traditional romantic comedy, thus this gives the film a very fresh appeal. Finally the ending to the film is both bittersweet and somewhat happy which makes a nice change from the happily ever after of most films of this genre. In all, Im not usually a big fan of this sort of film, there are a few odd execeptions that I will watch but overall I tend to find most of them very samey. 500 Days Of Summer however, is one of the films that is an exception to this. The film is very well acted, generally funny, well put together and very different to films with a simular type of story and on the plus side its more than suitable for us blokes to watch!
