For me this is as good as any Scorcese masterpiece, blending a poignant plot about vengeance in the vice city area known as The Five Points. Leonardo Di Caprio goes from strength to strength in this gritty story of the Irish Amsterdam Vallon who returns to his squalor home to take revenge on his father's behalf. Daniel Day Lewis perfectly portrays the ruthless villain of the story, and Cameron Diaz pleasantly surprised me with a strong performance. This harsh film set so realistically that it will take you straight back to this troubled period, coupled with the background story of the infamous American Civil War and a brilliant and so unpredictable ending, this movie is, in my opinion, one of the best films overlooked on the Oscar Winner list 2003.
