'A Short Film About Killing' is based on the Fifth Commandment: 'Thou Shalt Not Kill', and is a psychological vivisection of the brutal and senseless murder of a taxi-driver by a young drifter, with no explanation offered, and no extenuating circumstances given. Kieslowski demonstrates his skill and dexterity as a master of suspense, keeping tensions rising and viewers in knots, producing a searing, powerful moral indictment of capital punishment.
Directed by Kieslowski, the director of the 'Three Colours Trilogy', 'A Short Film About Killing' won numerous awards including the Jury Prize at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.

A Sort Film About Killing is really quite a simple one and lasts a mere 85 minutes. But don't let that fool you, since it will be the most harrowing 85 minutes you ever spend watching a film.
The film falls into two parts, the first of which deals in ghastly detail with the pointless murder of a taxi driver by a lonely young man. The second part depicts equally graphically the young man's execution. Linking the two together is the story of an idealistic young lawyer who finds himself unable to halt the second, state-sanctioned, killing.
Reduced to its most basic, the film amounts to nothing more than a "compare and contrast" exercise and although it doesn't overtly take sides, the inescapable conclusion is that when it comes to killing, there isn't much difference between the legal and illegal varieties.
Set against a background of the last days of Communist Poland, this film will never be forgotten once seen.
