Review

Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Cidade de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Douglas Silva) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts.

Nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2004 Oscars.

There is no other film which will show the harsh reality of the countries in extreme poverty such as City of god the story begins in the a part of Rio called Cidade de Deus (the city of god) it revolves around the life of two young boys, Rocket (narrator) and Lil Dice/ Ze; the story does a great job of showing the two boys very different dreams and paths through life in the city of god. This film is by far the best world cinema film I have ever seen and the director Fernando Meirelles does an outstanding job of showing the increasing problem with gang warfare in the future generations. This film is unmissable and shows perfectly how violence just spirals into more violence in the slums of Rio.

City of God is a in a movie genre of its own, if there was one word to sum up this movie it would be "Incredible"!
City of God will show you things which you could never imagining happen to anyone but it does happen, and it certainly did happen to this story's narrator "Rocket". From the open scene its a non stop ride, the pace of the movie is very fast just like life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, you live fast and die young, sometimes very young.
City of God is just an amazing movie, the story is absolutely brilliant and the fact its actually a true story makes it that little bit more impressive. The visuals in this movie are also amazing, the way in which it is filmed really gives you the feeling that you're there living your life in this terrifying place. City of God is a must have movie for everyone, its a very unique and special movie which will never be copied in anyway. Really you must buy it to believe how amazing it is!
