 A pretty good series

The Key to time is one complete season of adventures for the Doctor, Romana and K9 mark two.

The story kicks off as soon as the Doctor has departed Gallifrey at the end of The invasion of time when the TARDIS is intercepted by the White Guardian.

The Guardian has a task for the Doctor, he is to find all six segments of a device known as The key to time - which can be used to stop the entire universe and correct any errors in time and space.

The Black Guardian is desperate to seize the key for his own purposes and will do anything to acheive this.

When the Doctor returns to the TARDIS after his meeting with the White Guardian his new assistant Romana (Mary Tamm) is waiting and both of them - with the new K9, begin the search for the six segments which are scattered all over the universe.

Yes its a long serial but it is quite entertaining.

 Brilliant boxset.

The first four episodes were great, but the last two were very disappointing, the last one was too long and started dragging towards the end. i rate them out of these:

THE RIBOS OPERATION: 9/10
THE PIRATE PLANET: 8/10
THE STONES OF BLOOD: 10/10
THE ANDROIDS OF TARA: 7/10
THE POWER OF KRULL: 3/10
THE ARMAGEDDON FACTOR: 4/10

The six individual Key To Time stories were released on region 1 only in the early part of the century with hardly any extra features.
It was then released as region 2 in late 2007.

The 2007 release of all 6 episodes was actually 7 discs, The Armageddon Factor being split across two.

"sorry K9 - the holidays off!"

6 adventures in one boxset - a complete season of Tom Baker!

sent on an important mission by Colonel Sanders (sorry i just had to!) the 4th Doctor gains a new companion (the gorgeous Mary Tamm as a very regal Time Lady Romana a great contrast to Baker's bohemian eccentric Time Lord) and sets off on a series of exciting travels - including a script by Douglas Adams

whilst the idea of the quest for the Key to Time is a really epic sounding idea its really just an excuse for the Doctor and his friends to find themselves in trouble - something the series managed perfectly well up until now without the need for story arcs. while the quest idea starts well in 'Ribos Operation' with the TARDIS hijacked by the powerful White Guardian it fails to reach a satisfactory conclusion at the end of 'Armageddon Factor' - in fact its so rushed you wonder if they almost forgot to wrap things up!

the individual stories themselves are entertaining stuff mixing monsters, technobabble, horror and comedic banter from alien planets to shadowy space stations via ancient stone circles and muddy swamps - classic Dr Who at its best without even a single Dalek in sight
