Doctor Who: The Complete Specials Box Set (5 Discs)

David tennant is thee best doctor and he just proves his amazing acting skills in his last episodes. And this DVD is a must buy fo all doctor who fans. However things do get pretty emotional towards the end, so be prepared to cry. Overall 5/5

Some people seem to be confused as to why other specials such as "The Runaway Bride" or "Voyage Of The Damned" are not on this set. This boxset is only for the 2009 specials, not ALL the specials. So it is infact Complete, as the 2009 season of episodes was always called "the specials" and not series 5 or whatever number.

This set shows the final episodes of David Tennant's Doctor. Yes at times it was a bit silly (like having The Master as "Skeletor" for example, The End Of Time could have been done without that plot point and seems like it was only added to use up the budget alloted), but they were all moving in their own way.

From the moment in "Planet Of The Dead" when The Doctor first hears "He will knock four times", he knows he is on borrowed time. And until "He" actually knocks, it is a whirlwind of madness.

The only niggling problem I have with the Doctor Who boxsets is that they have always been released at such high prices, un til they eventually come down in price. When first released, these episodes were essentially costing at least 5 pound each, showing the BBC cares more for pounds than the fans, but this is BBC's fault, not Play.com .

So enjoy the final episodes of David Tennant, knowing that you will enjoy (for the most part) the song that is ending soon.

The end of time was a brilliant two parter with one of the best actors in our country + also one of the best doctors
This two parter is a great/sad farewell to the doctor and with an amazing cast.
Its deffently worth the money

Just a quick review to try and sort out a few mistakes by at least one of the reviews on here, this is in fact all the specials, as we did not have a season 5 in 2009 the BBC production team classed all the episodes shown post season 4 as specials and this collection has them all. I have dropped one star for the simple reason they could have had more than one episode per disc, I mean who wants to get to a cliff hanger and then dive out of your comfy armchair and put another disc in apart from that a wonderful box set and well worth owning, I have the blu-ray edition and the picture is outstanding and the standard for the previous DVDs has been so high I see no problem with the DVD version, lovely to see the full versions of the Doctor who confidentials and not the mega edited versions that usually escape onto DVD, so sit back and watch the last few episodes of David Tennant with a wee tear in the corner of your eye, you will not be dissapointed with this set, it you have the other season box sets then you will have bought this already, no doctor who collection will be complete without it.

I am not happy about this collection at all. Not only is it mostly repeating what is already available in the 2009 Winter Specials set but also its hugely misleading calling it "Complete".

Last I checked "The Runaway Bridge" and "Voyage of the Damned" were specials so them not being included in a set titled "The Complete Specials" is very misleading indeed.

OK over all top notch X-mass ones stutter & Im not convinced a double hitter was way to end. But over all I must say well done but how come we get that suprise marrage it dosent work. Also All Halows Eve was best date for Waters they missed trick there as they did with no visit for Lady Christina de Souza or the UNIT boys.

I like david as the Doctor but after a while,you can guess how many times he's going to say "Allons-y" before the episode has even broadcast!
But,with the first two stories being weaker and the last three being superb,you must buy this set!I'm only reviewing the episodes,I haven't got the box set so I can't comment on the extras!

After the bad previous series I wasnt holding out a lot of hope for the stories for these final specials for the end of Tennants reign as the Doctor, and rightly so as these episodes are very dull indeed and most of them are badly written, with the exception of The Waters Of Mars relying too much on giant reset buttons to reverse a somewhat irreversible plot. In addition the over-exposure of Tennant at the time of the specials only made me want him to leave even more, a very disappointing end indeed. Role on series five and the new Doctor!

THE NEXT DOCTOR
Some fantastic performances especially from Tennant and Morrissey with some brilliant special effects, let down by a rubbish story and a bad title, a more suitable one would have been The Other Doctor.

PLANET OF THE DEAD
A decent premise rubbished by the glossing over of the threat the planet and the creatures faced. Michelle Ryan does the best she can to make her character likable but she comes off slightly cartoonish. And the less said about the flying bus the better!

THE WATERS OF MARS
Prior to broadcast this sounded scary instead we get the Doctor going on and on about not being able/allowed to change fixed events in time and space (we get it!) and aside from that nothing much happens until the final few minutes where we get a glimpse of a darker doctor. Lindsey Duncan puts in a decent performance as an astronaut outshining Tennant at times.

THE END OF TIME (PARTS ONE AND TWO)
A shambolic part one featuring far too much running around and not enough explanation of the plot (what little there is of it!). John Simm is back as The Master and easily steals both parts of the show from Tennant, although the whole side plot of the Master-race was a bit cheesy. Bernard Cribbins stars as Wilfred (Donnas granddad) which is a brilliant piece of casting and he alongside Tennant provide some memorable scenes. Ex-Bond Timothy Dalton pops up in a short but great guest stint. Part two is undoubtedly better than part one although the overlong, self indulgent goodbye/reward scene did seem of drag on and it was a bit annoying considering that we saw him say goodbye to all his companions at the end of the previous series and that Tennant is just one in a long line of actors to have played the role. The regeneration scene also seemed a little rushed and Tennants last words seemed a little whiney for me, Ecclestons regeneration was better imo. A shambolic finale for Tennant to leave in and far too overlong in places, also Tennant was outshined by many of the guest stars, a real shame.

I agree with the person below. none of these specials were a patch on any of the previous series. In trying to do something amazing for David Tennants departure they seemed to have forgotten the basis of Dr Who, great stories. The final two specials are especially disappointing, part 1 basically features John Sim jumping all over the place and eating. David Tennants final moments though were touching.

To the person below asking about Voyage of the Damned, that was the Christmas special in Christmas 2008, so is on the Series 4 boxset.

David Tenants 10th Doctor adventures we brilliant when they started but with the year off from having a regular series all of the specials were simply not up to scratch.

1. The Next Doctor was simply boring and David Morrissey was wasted.

2. Planet of the dead had Lee Evans and the girl from Eastenders as two badly misscast characters and another weak plot.

3. The waters of Mars simply could have been so much better.

4 & 5 John Simm as The Master flying about and firing energy was to over the top even for the Timelords - and their return in the first episode was the thing to look forward to but sadly they were returned to their prision in time by the Doctor.

The Doctors regeneration was the highlight of the last episode and it was superbly done but it was ruined by R.T.D revisiting the 10th Doctors companions before he changed.

A new Doctor and a new production team should bring the show hopefully back on track for 2010!
