After being attacked by the Rani, the TARDIS crash-lands on the planet Lakertya. On the floor of the console room, the Doctor begins his sixth regeneration...
In his post-regenerative confusion the Doctor is separated from his young companion Mel and tricked into assisting the Rani in her megalomaniac scheme to construct a giant time manipulator.
Lost on the barren surface of the planet, Mel has to avoid the Rani's ingenious traps and her monstrous, bat-like servants, the Tetraps. She joins forces with a rebel faction among the Lakertyans, desperate to end the Rani's control of their planet.

This was the story that got me into Doctor Who. The 7th Doctor & Mel will always be my favourite coupling. Best Doctor Who cliffhanger ending ever at the end of Part 1. Genuine peril! I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet! Kate O Mara as the Rani is excellent as always, as is her imitation of Mel. I love the Bubbletraps! They are brilliantly executed and come out well. Despite the many bad write ups this story has received, I wonder how many of the reviewers have actually watched this properly. They probably saw Bonnie's name and chose to hate it before watching it. It's brilliant. Sylvester and Bonnie are excellent too. Keep an eye out for the for the cliffhanger ending of part 1 if you're new to this, and tell me [before you see part 2], how do you think it's going to reslove itself. Can't say too much. Are you intrigued? Give it a go!
I've been waiting for this for ages - but if you haven't seen it before, follow my advice. Ignore what anyone else says. Don't read any reviews about this story (apart from this one) Approach Time and the Rani with a fresh head, and just get sucked up in the sheer bnokerness of the whole thing. Choose to love mel, not hate her, laugh along with the insane Rani and adore Sylvester's bumbling post-regeneration doctor and fall in lve with this story like i did.
Don't just hate it because it's fashionable.
I have to disagree with Rockfan 1973.Sylvester McCoy was a good choice to play the doctor he was much better than the awful Colin Baker who effectively killed the programme. Not even McCoy could rescue bad scripts and awful production standards set by JNT.
Simply dreadfull choice of Doctor and companion with terrible story, bad music and effects and the worst regeneration scene ever.
