Based on a real life series of murders in 1970’s Pennsylvania, AT CLOSE RANGE is a chilling portrayal of a family’s life of crime. Starring CHRISTOPHER WALKEN (Catch Me If You Can, True Romance) and SEAN PENN (The Thin Red Line, Dead Man Walking).
When young Brad Whitewood Jr’s (PENN) wayward father wanders back into his life, he is attracted by his dangerous dad’s criminal activities. Soon Brad Jr and his half brother (played by Penn’s real life brother CHRIS PENN) attempt to join the crime syndicate to make big money. But their crimes soon turn from theft to murder..
Walken and Penn are stunning in this savage movie, directed by JAMES FOLEY (Glengarry Glen Ross) that features the stirring and beautiful track by, Penn’s then wife MADONNA, Live To Tell. There are also brilliant performances from MARY STUART MASTERSON (Benny & Joon) and KIEFER SUTHERLAND (TV’s 24).

Very slow build up almost bubblegum teen american cinema until the last 45mins when it becomes rather dark and sinister (Christopher Walken). The cast is ok as i have never been a big fan of Sean Penn it took me about an hour to believe in the main character. A very interesting story based on true events.

Last watched this as a rowdy adolescent 15 years ago.....and loved it! Still excellent even if Walken's characterisation has become a little cliched. Dark, emotive, confrontational....does what U.S cinema does best.
