 Undiscovered gem

I watched this for the 2nd time last night and I really do think this film has a certain special "something" about it.

Subtlety is the key with 'They'. It's not constantly trying to make you jump or impress you with spectacular effects. It's not blatantly gory or graphic. It has no megastars in the lead roles. But what it does have, is a brilliant storyline, good solid acting, and above all, a very effective, creepy atmosphere which builds a tangible sense of dread as it progresses.

'They' is one of those films which draws you in, makes you want to know what's happening, and what's going to happen. The monsters are glimpsed in the blink of an eye, in the darkness and the shadows. Their unknown or unknowable nature makes their presence all the more terrifying.

Great acting. Great story. Great atmosphere. An undiscovered gem. Buy it now.

 That damn closet!

This film has everything you could want from a horror film: a cute cast (especially the lead), lots of errant machinery, dodgy flashlights, lightning, power failures, movement in the shadows, and glimpsed monsters, oh, and a very cute lead. There's even a full moon (well, nearly full). It doesn't break any new ground but it does succeed in achieving an effective sense of mounting dread. The performances from the mostly unknown (and did I mention cute?) cast are good, and the filming and effects are polished; particularly the monsters, which move in a wonderfully creepy way. It even manages a neat and satisfying ending. Although in the grand scheme of all things cinematic this film only warrants three stars in the world of horror flicks it easily deserves four.

High Expectations , but left me bored.

I bought this based on all the good reviews. Expected to be entertained. Unfortunately I soon got bored as it was so slow and the CGI creatures were just not scary or realistic enough.
