Play.com Review

Following in the ghoulish footsteps of 'found footage' classics The Blair Witch Project and Rec, Paranormal Activity is the latest low-budget ultra scare-fest to wow Hollywood! Made for just $15,000 in director Oren Peli's very own home, this unique indie cross between The Exorcist and Poltergeist has left cinema audiences in a perpetual state of terror.

Filmed in a documentary style, Paranormal Activity follows day-trader Micah and college student Katie, a young couple "Engaged to be engaged." Played by unknowns Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston, the leads are wholly sympathetic and normal characters living out a seemingly mundane suburban existence, which is part of the movie's genius - many of us could be them, minus the paranormal activity! When Micah takes it upon himself to film Katie's claims that she has been haunted since childhood, audiences will likely be just as sceptical as he is, but not for long... Sleep is going to be a problem.

Not beyond some good old-fashioned scares - strange noises and things that go bump in the night - the film takes all the classics and the cliches of the genre, but roots them in a reality that audiences can relate to - nearly everyone has seen or experienced something unexplainable on some level. But what do you do when the unexplainable keeps on happening and it's damn scary?

You really will feel like you're watching genuine hauntings of these poor unfortunate souls, but - as with all great horror movies - it's what you don't see that really sets the imagination racing. That such terror was achieved on a micro budget is a testament to the filmmaker - few like-minded films have been as successful, Blair Witch being one exception.

For optimum frights, we recommend you leave the lights off if you can bear it. Whatever you do, make sure you order in some new underwear because you're going to need them, and if DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg have anything to do with it you might have to buy a few pairs because sequels are likely on the way.

This film is scary if 1 you are american and 2 if you are under the age of 10. I cannot see the scary side to this film. A few bumps and shakes and the door slamming shut really big WOW! I could do the same with a camera and a bit of string and a fan! Budget movies at there best!

I saw this whilst on holiday in the States and thought it was very good. It didnt scare me has much has the rest of the audience who seemed terrified by what they had just seen.
It was only later that evening has you think about what has taken place on the screen that this creepy little film starts to kick in the more you think about it the more it terrifys you and it really does it affected my sleep for a few evenings.
The only thing that i can say to you about this film is watch it you wont be let down, it really is scary and will chill you to your bones you need an imagination to find this scary by the way if you only like the blood and guts slasher horror films then give this a miss just like Blair Witch its the terror of what you dont see that makes this movie truly scary.
The film has different endings as well the one that I saw in the States is different to the one being shown here in the U.K at present and both of them are as creepy and scary has the other.

First of all, I would just like to say that some people on here can't even spell, let alone write a review!!
Noticing some of the comments previously, it's clear that many of these 'reviewers' did not pay attention to the film - what's the point of leaving the house when it is clearly explained that the demonic spirit has followed the lead protagonist throughout her life from home to home.
Yes, it's not some big-budgeted glossy hollywood horror flick where everything is over-dramaticised and camped up to the high heavens, dripping with predictability. It is, however, a very clever study of the human psyche when normal everyday people are pitted against a more powerful force of nature than anyone could care to imagine.
The pacing is set perfectly to lull viewers into a false sense of security with an underlying current of the unknown slowing building throughout the film, until the shocking finale.
There are couple of genuine scares in the film and if you really get into the frame of mind of what the characters are being subjected to then it can get under your skin and creep you out for days after.
The only real criticism I can give this film is that the male character Micah was a little too annoying and dense for my liking.
Watch it and judge for yourselves....

Don't do it to yourself! I was taken by a friend to the cinema to see this film and I was tempted to never speak to them again. This film wasnt scary it played on the same daft people who threw up when they first saw the Blair Withc Project. At least points of Blair Witch were scary this is just boring and at best disorientating. I would save the money and buy a couple of pints.
