Polanski is renowned for putting his characters and the audience through the emotional ringer and this is probably his finest moment (but Rosemary's Baby is hot on its heels for sure). Sexual repression and isolation lead to the main character's descent into insanity as subjective camera work blurs the boundaries between reality and madness. And she's the prettiest girl you can imagine too which makes it all the more shocking.
