When luckless Lane Mayer's girlfriend dumps him for the captain of the Glendale High School ski-team, his imagination runs riot. His mother's a disaster in the kitchen, his kid brother's building killer laser guns in the bedroom, the paper boy's out to get him - and his father thinks he's paranoid! With everyone against him, Lane thinks he'd be far better off dead - that is until he goes head over heels for the foreign exchange student next door!

What a joy this movie is. One of two Cusack made with Savage Steve Holland in the 80s-the other being One Crazy Summer with Demi Moore.
Better off Dead no matter how surreal is one of the most honest movies to tackle teen romance and the ultimate humiliation of being dumped by your first love.
Cusack tries a variety of half hearted suicide attempts before being galvanized into challenging the jock who stole his, frankly, tramp of a girlfriend to an equally suicidal skiing race.
Cusack never seems above the material and is thoughtful, crestfallen, and funny all at the same time. He is humiliated at every turn but such is his performance that you wish him well and never really laugh at him.
The new "frat pack" obviously owe this movie a debt of gratitude for paving the way for their brand of humour-silly, gross out, but ultimately touching.
