In a world where mankind has been wiped out by germ warfare, Los Angeles is the desolate playground of the sole survivor of the tragedy. Robert Neville (Heston) spends his sunny L.A. days gunning his convertible around town foraging for supplies, but at night he flees to the safety of his barricaded penthouse, high above the streets and the other "survivors".
After sunset the streets belong to the "Family"; nocturnal, plague-ravaged victims of the germ war, out to destroy all things modern - and that includes Neville! When Neville encounters other healthy survivors his life changes completely. At last, there is hope but not if the Family can help it...

It's not a bad film ...

As one reviewer has already pointed out - the start is fantastic. From then, though, it starts to fall down the same line that most 60's / 70's disaster/horror films followed. This isn't a bad film at all - the camera work is very good as is the sense that Heston is alone. But the film suffers from just getting old and feeling dated; some films just do that.
However- if you like the style of the "classic 70's flicks' - then you will love this. All the clichés are there and as well as the hippy script from writers still reliving the swinging 60's.
Worth a viewing - just

It was this film that made me keen to see I am legend.
O M made a huge impact on me and left me with a haunting feeling of what if/that could happen.
Charlton Heston was fantastic as that final human...or so he thought! The special effects look dated now, but this film is a must for all those that want to see an original superstar at work. Loved every minute of it..the suspense ...the strange uneasy feeling of what if....Larger than life Charlton Heston..RIP.
Really recommend it.
