The Vampire Diaries: Season 1 (5 Discs)

I get the impression from the reviews that the "romance" tag of the series means male viewers have to enjoy it secretly. Everyone raves about the "hot" male stars and Nina Dobrev, who is one of the most promising young actresses I've seen for quite a while, barely gets a mention.

I've never seen Twilight and only watched this series because I always check out any new Sci-Fi or Fantasy series. My first impression was that it was fairly unoriginal but worth recording if only to see Nina. I actually recorded the whole series before watching beyond episode 3. Once I started watching the rest and the twists started to come in, I was hooked and everything else on my recorder had to wait until I'd seen the whole series. Once the DVD arrived I watched it again right through and the performances were good enough to sustain it even with the suspense taken out. The three stars and most of the supporting characters are so convincing in their roles that when I dip in for my favourite scenes I get completely drawn in again.

I'll look forward both to the next series and to getting hold of more of Nina Dobrev's other work.

it takes the books as a guide line and manages to take it to a whole new level, with more twists and turns more depth to the characters and more action. I have been fascinated vampires since I was 5 years old and when the twilight film came out and the big frenzy around it. I thought it let the vampire world down, and now everyone compares all new vampire things to 'The Twilight Saga' when most of them are better as twilight should hardly be classed as a vampire film its more like a romance novel with a tiny bit of action!
Where as the vampire diaries has the romance aspect like Buffy did but keeps it as a vampire/ sci-fi program. I personally think it is one of the best vampire things in a long time.

Very different from the books that they were based on, yet still retain the main character's essentual personality. It's different and the closest thing to Buffy that we get these days. It takes a while to pick up momentum, but when it does there are so many plot twists that it'll make your head spin!... In a good way!
Entertaining, funny in parts, serious in others, sweet eye candy and vampires doing what they do best. You get the tortured 'veggie' and the wicked (and somehow sexier) Vamp-and-loving-it. Modern with good plot. What's not to love?!

Well, what a surprise this series turned out to be; don't know the books, don't know the background & thought that the first couple of episodes were a bit Buffy but goodness me, what a stunner this has turned out to be. Each episode has come up with the requisite surprises and 'page turners' to keep me tuning in for the next episode, the repeat then the repeats of the repeats. Think I'll just have to buy the boxed set when it comes out & watch the repeats all over again. The characters might look a biit flawless, polished, gleaming but the storyline and acting cover over the relentless gorgeousness and the plotlines move the story along effortlessly from one twist to another. Although the story revolves around teens with the adults acting as gravity the slick production values keep the whole thing afloat. Sorry it's only four stars, the five stars rating is reserved for True Blood which is the daddy of the genre at the moment I'm afraid. Nevertheless, the Vampire Diaries is a first class product and if you like vampire stories then this is a first class production and much recommended. Enjoy!!
