Some gems from the Pink Panther collection

There are five films in this collection. The first one (The Pink Panther) is quite funny, the second one (A Shot in the Dark) is funnier, the third one (The Pink Panther Strikes Again) is the funniest film ever made (that's just my opinion), the fourth one (Revenge of the Pink Panther) is very funny but not as funny as the third and the fifth one (Trail of the Pink Panther) is hardly funny at all, being a mere disjointed and incoherent montage of some of the funnier episodes in the preceding films. The sixth disc has the special features: documentaries and cartoons.

I purchased this collection in order to get "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" which is not available on its own for region 2 DVD players. It's my all-time favourite comedy that I watch whenever it's broadcast on television. Even though I've watched it many times, it still renders me helpless: a rocking, heaving wet mass of gasping tears and peculiar choking noises. Really, I would have paid the collection price for the one film. The other three are a bonus of which "The Revenge" is most especially appreciated. It's just a shame that "Return of the Pink Panther" isn't included in this box. I've just ordered it separately.

It seems an extraordinary insult to give this collection any fewer than the full five stars. It's all relative and relative to the average film available on DVD today, the first two discs in this box rate rather highly, the third deserves a whole constellation of stars and the fourth is easily worth the full five. The last two discs are a different matter - so there's a dilemma. After careful consideration and with great regret I'm deducting one star because "The Trail" is really quite bad, "The Return" is missing and the documentaries and cartoons seemed superfluous (but that's just my opinion again).

i thought that the pink panther was a series of cartoons. when i started to watch the films, real actors films, it was kind of funny, then the third and fourth film were so darn funny i was laughing with tears in my eyes, especially the film in Hong Kong. being able to see these other countries, rome,, paris, usa (hum!), england, hong kong; brings lightness and happiness in my room.

i wasn't dissappointed for my cartoons since the documentary dvd also has about 6 cartoons of the pink panther(althouggh not as funny as tom+ jerry or other cartoons). Also, there are a couple of Peter Seller's one-minute ads which are... amusing... his talent lies in his ability to change personalities, like his switch from an waify irishman to a hulky spanish dude.

i made a mistake and watched the last pink panther dvd first - the last one wasnt funny and I nearly slept because the people talk so much, i wish i HAD slept because it kinda spoiled the surprise for me when I watched the other films in their order. I mean to say that the fifth p.p. film in this series takes bits and pieces of jokes from the others. so; don't watch the last film first! but for the other dvds, this was well worth my money and I was very pleasantly surprised. Even my boyfriend likes these, and he sleeps easily in films (we watch the films in french, and they are still funny) .

i have to give this 5 stars depite that one DVD, since the other dvd is so funny it is worth more than 5 stars. I wish I could buy this twice.

 A WORK OF COMIC GENIUS!

Although not the complete Sellers collection of the bumbling inspector's miss adventures, at least it contains the best.
The most funny thing about the Pink Panther series is that the first film is actually not that funny, and it's the sequels where Sellers turns the inspector in to a work of comic genius.
The movies all contain some inspired moments comedy as Sellers fumbles his way through the plot, but to be fair they are actually a hit and miss affair, whith A Shot In The Dark being by far the best. But you don't go watching these movies expecting anything other than Sellers being at the top of his game, and in these he has never been better.
These are great family comedies that all the family can watch.

A MUST FOR ALL TRUE COMEDY FANS

| | See all RooneyTunes's reviews (6)

This box set is great and a must see. Originally made as a platform for David Niven it was soon realised that Peter Sellers was the true star of these films and from 'A Shot in the Dark' the films concentrated on his character Clouseau rather than the Phantom/Sir Charles Lytton. Sellers comic genius shines through and he has me in fits from the moment he appears on screen.

The first 4 films in the collection are gems but the later ones not so as they were put together after Seller's death and are therefore full of scenes from the previous films

One little moan is that this box set does not include the brilliant 'Return of the Pink Panther' which I have had to buy separately and that is why I have had to knock off a star but saying that what you get here is well worth the money. You won't be disappointed.
