Mamoru Oshii's futuristic animated masterpiece, 'Ghost In The Shell', is the perfect film to experience on DVD. Seamlessly merging traditional cel animation with the latest computer graphic imagery, this stunning sci-fi spectacle has broken the boundaries of mainstream animation with its detailed artistic direction and uniquely intelligent story line.

Aided by an esoteric Kenji Kawai score, 'Ghost In The Shell' took the world by storm in 1996, introducing a new wave of Japanese animation through its mesmerzing cinematic expression. A movie that questions our own human existence in the fast-paced world of the information age, this remarkable, award-winning, cyber-tech thriller has gone on to become one of the leading Japanese animation films of all time.

 Hollywood's Bench Mark.

Ghost in The Shell is perfect. There is no doubts about that in my head as I write this review. The animation still looks amazing to this day but it is the story and ideas of the future that captivates and holds you. A world of bleak and evil lifestyles that scarily seems so believable.
Ghost followed Akira into the must have status of the genre. But the difference being, Ghost have become the bench mark and the water well of ideas that is still fuelling Hollywood today. Spawning the likes of The Matrix, Equilibrium, Blade and adversely V for Vendetta and Ultraviolet as well as inspiring James Cameron after it's release. Itself has a few nods to the Classic 'Blade Runner'. But this is writing and film making of the highest order.
5 Stars - A must, along with it's Sequel and the Three GIG series that followed. Please don't be put off by it being animated!

A shining testament to what anime can acheive

Ghost in the shell is the movie that first made me develop a liking for anime probably because it was the complete polar opposite of Dragonball Z which is what I previously thought anime was like. A view which I am sure is shared by many non anime fans

Ghost in the shell has superb animation even by todays standards and some of the most beautiful imagery put into an animated movie. The plot may be confusing to new people but it definitely creates tension and makes the more intelligent viewer ask alot of questions.

Ghost in the shell creates its own unique "Not so perfect after all" future by introducing things such as cyberisaiton but instead of going down the stereotypical "Robots will enslave us all" plot line this film deals with cyborgs managing their own humanity as well as intriguing problems that come along with cyberisaiton for example brain hacking where another person can control your body by electronically hacking into your cyber brain.

I don't reccomend the film to everyone on the planet as some would say it requires a bit of patience personally I prefer to say it requires a certain level of intellect to truly interpret the films messages and understand the point of what's going on or to understand exactly what "The puppet master" says.

The film runs shorter than most hollywood films but thats fine it means it makes a good impression on us and doesn't overstay its welcome and it means there's less time between the intro and the edge of the seat climax at the end of the film.

Definitely a 5/5 for being original, defying convention, great animaiton, good story, sympathetic characters, great audio track (including a fantastic English dub which IMO exceed the Japanese voice track which is a rare thing) and the most immersive world since Blade runner IMO

P.S I think fans of Blade Runner would enjoy this film greatly.

 Great animation, Slightly over rated

The animation is fantastic in this film, although the story is a bit strange, i cant help feel that like Akira this film is very over rated.

One of the best alongside Akira

This film was a breakthrough in animation mixing it with computer effects and worked brilliantly. I think this is a masterpiece its got so much. A compelling story but they don't try to be too clever so you understand what's going on. The action is great and intense and the characters are really likable especially Batou, a big ass guy. The main character Motoko is interesting trying to find herself in a cyborg body and wants to find the answers from the puppet master who is also looking for her for its own reason's. This film is defiantly up there with the mighty Akira. I haven't really seen a decent film from Manga since in my opinion.

 The Greatest Film ever!

I Bought Ghost In The Shell as a recormendation by a friend as it has left a great impression on me. Great story, great music score, great visuals the best characters i have ever seen in a movie. It has everything a movie needs. Since getting this i have bought the sequal, the Stand Alone Complex Season 1 & 2 boxsets and the solid state film. And i also bought the original Mana to find out the films origins. To some up a great film and gets better each time i watch it.
5 STARS.
