Ghost in the shell is the movie that first made me develop a liking for anime probably because it was the complete polar opposite of Dragonball Z which is what I previously thought anime was like. A view which I am sure is shared by many non anime fans
Ghost in the shell has superb animation even by todays standards and some of the most beautiful imagery put into an animated movie. The plot may be confusing to new people but it definitely creates tension and makes the more intelligent viewer ask alot of questions.
Ghost in the shell creates its own unique "Not so perfect after all" future by introducing things such as cyberisaiton but instead of going down the stereotypical "Robots will enslave us all" plot line this film deals with cyborgs managing their own humanity as well as intriguing problems that come along with cyberisaiton for example brain hacking where another person can control your body by electronically hacking into your cyber brain.
I don't reccomend the film to everyone on the planet as some would say it requires a bit of patience personally I prefer to say it requires a certain level of intellect to truly interpret the films messages and understand the point of what's going on or to understand exactly what "The puppet master" says.
The film runs shorter than most hollywood films but thats fine it means it makes a good impression on us and doesn't overstay its welcome and it means there's less time between the intro and the edge of the seat climax at the end of the film.
Definitely a 5/5 for being original, defying convention, great animaiton, good story, sympathetic characters, great audio track (including a fantastic English dub which IMO exceed the Japanese voice track which is a rare thing) and the most immersive world since Blade runner IMO
P.S I think fans of Blade Runner would enjoy this film greatly.
