 Could have been a contender

The start of this remake is actually quite good and uses modern CGI effectively - probably the best Triffids ever. However the drift away from the original novel does disappoint and it ends up a bit Hollywood Blockbuster but without the budget.
I am not sure that Wyndham's story can be used unaltered these days - the philosophising is a bit stilted - but this adaptation doesn't really crack it. The 80's version is better purely because it treats it more as a period piece. On the other hand it is miles better than the watchably dire film made back in the 60's

 Dissapointed

I was looking foreward to watching this but was dissapointed, I thought the original series and film were much better, the Triffids were not in it enough.

Day Of The Triffids remake disapointment

I've been waiting for a creepy, modern bigger budget remake of what was a remarkable 1980's adaption, back in the era of Threads, and all that proper "fear of the end of civilization" stuff back then - truly the stuff of nightmares. But invariably, 1980's Day O The Triffids started to looked a little - well, cheap and dated pretty quickly. So I awaited this version eagerly but was bitterly disapointed. It goes recklessly off John Wyndham's unimprobavable plot apparently on some whim believing this is how to cater for the modern audience. The triffids look great, but are hardly in it (although to be fair that is the case in the book too) but are not really an improvement on the BBC 1980's version which were menacing, if a little unlikely looking. The casting however, is really quite good though I had assumed that Dougray Scott would play Coker, and Izzard was going to be a brave re-imagining of the part of Bill Masen. In style and content, the show looks more like Charlie Brooker's excellent Dead Set (you know - most of it shot in the Dark!) , but sadly lacked that series' wit or menace. Meanwhile BBC's remake of Surviors continues to remind me nostalgicly of the original BBC Day Of The Triffids, making me wish we could have a long running creative exploitation of Wyndams classic there in it's stead, where perhaps deviations from the source material might have seemed more justified over a longer, more courageous run. 2 for effort., but it falls short due to thinking it can improve on Wyndham. Overall, a missed opportunity. Avoid.

 Very Good! But

Needed to be in three parts rather than two, changes the original story too much in the second part which messed up the flow of the story. However, a very good retelling of John Wyndham's book which is very close to capturing his style and flare for thought provoking science fiction.

 V. good, but sometimes drags on!

Start was brilliant, towards the end of the first episode, though, it felt like it was going on forever. Wasn't sure if I should watch the 2nd episode, but so glad I did! It was brilliant! But why, oh WHY did they have to include global warming into the story-line? The original story plot was much better, none of that silly political spin science. But, apart from that, would highly recommend it.

 Very Watchable & Entertaining

Enjoyed this remake of a classic - very much a brought up to date for the new Dr Who generation. Dougray Scott acts his part well as do the rest of the cast - even with Eddie Izzard competing with the triffids to see who's the baddest!

 Enjoyment

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Think the right actors were picked for the parts. Yes, a tad unrealistic but much better than most of the rubbish shown on T.V nowadays!

 Great TV
