Despite the intriguing set-up and attractive visuals, I was always put off by this title on acount of the 30 minute length. I struggled to imagine how something so short could justify its price-tag, let alone the numerous awards hurled its way.

However, having just had the opportunity to see it, I can now see why (at least as far as the awards are concerned). The overall story is epic, the style and animation are perfect - ranging from simple and traditional hand-drawn work to advanced and impressive CG work depending on what best suits a particular scene - the action is of the highest quality and the central plot is beautiful and heart rending.

As for the length; it is as short as it is because of the way the story is told. Perhaps more time could have been spent telling the background of the war that forms the setting, but then there's the risk of detracting from the central story and making the whole thing less than it is.
