This is one of the best movies of recent years. Casting is fantastic, direction and score both brilliant as well. The story line is something that many believe WILL happen one day in the future, mankind has reached the point of nuclear war and after most the planets inhabitants have been killed in 'the flash' as Eli recalls, the world is left in a dark and violent grip.
Watch this, and prey it never happens in your lifetime.

  Post-Apocalyptic World

| | See all stuartfear's reviews (768)

After an apocalyptic event the world is in chaos, bandits running riot, no form of law and order, and no one to protect the innocent. Washington plays a man on a quest to go west, he has a personal mission to complete and is set on doing so.
A change of pace for Washington, this is a much more action filled role with a lot of sword swinging and gun shooting. His performance is great, plays it honest and comes across as believable. Gary Oldman plays the bad guy and doesn't fail to deliver.
Theres a good amount of development before getting into the true plot, and unfortunately when the true plot gets going it seems to end just a little too quickly.

Overall: A good movie, an interesting well written story which provides a good ending with a cool twist.

  Good not great

This is a good film, with excellent cinematography and, as usual, a great performance by Denzel Washington. For me it was between a 3 and 4 star film, mainly because of the ending which, I thought, was pretty corny. However, well worth a watch.

Post Apocalyptic thriller - worth seeing!

Definitely one of the best post-apocalyptic movies I've seen. It manages to be action-packed and have lots of interesting characters as well as some fascinating ideas.

Eli himself is a very watchable hero; quiet, sedate and peaceful at heart, yet capable of awesome violence when required. During his fight scenes, he reminded me of Blade, who had equally deft skills with swords.

I was annoyed that the apocalypse itself was never properly explained. So it loses one star for that. It loses another star for the religious aspect which I found somewhat over played.

The ending was great. One of those endings which leaves you thinking, and makes you want to watch the whole film again.

  Brilliantly spiritually insightful.

If everyone who saw this film received it's message there would be a worl-wide revival of decency and ethics such as has not been seen since the garden of Eden.

  Surprisingly Entertaining

Firstly there is not many if any movies with Denzel being the lead character that i would call crap. The book of eli was a refreshing approach to the usual action movie plot. He brings soul to his character which goes hand in hand with the action in the movie.Overall its worth watching, the story is great and the pace steady. If the apocalyptic thing isnt your cup of tea well make an exception you will be surprised.

Suitable for Theists and Atheists alike

I don't usually review anything on here, but I think a clarification is required. Whether you believe in God or not, this film will not annoy you. Religion plays a major role in the plot, which is beautifully executed, and should not be used as a tool to stir controversy. Speaking as an atheist, I found nothing annoying about this film. Nothing at all. I enjoyed it as much as any film I've seen in recent years. Unfortunately, I dont think The Book of Eli was well promoted, if it was then i missed it, but i predict it will become one of those slow-burning classics. No matter what you believe, don't let the subject matter of this film cause you to miss out on an excellent experience. I've watched it a few times now, and I'm still looking for a flaw. Well paced, great action, wonderfully understated acting and a visual theme that makes you believe you're really watching the future. All that and a twist that will blow your socks off... I can't believe you're still reading this and not buying The Book of Eli.

Certainly worth a watch, Denzel Washington and Mila Kunis team up in a post apocalyptic world where he heads west to deliver a mysterious message. Plenty of twists along the way, especially the ending without wanting to spoil it for anyone. Denzel Washington rarely makes a bad film.
