Ju-On: White Ghost - it stays true to the original in its format, its setting is one single house but involves a number of characters. The movie is split up into chapters, with each chapter being on a certain character. For me the chapters pan out a little like this
1st scary, 2nd not, 3rd scary, 4th not, 5th scary, 6th & 7th not, 8th is the climax.
The scary scenes are terrifying, some of the creepest and eerie scenes ever made. The suspense was killing me, I could literally feel my skin crawling, my hairs standing on end and my heart thumping. Truly scary stuff, a great horror movie overall. The story is good, well written and well directed.
Top Quality horror - 4/5
Ju-On: Black Ghost - A huge disappointment. It's setup in the same chapter format but this time there's a lot fewer characters. The story just isn't right for Ju-On, it feels too far fetched and not enough on the basics. The story doesn't really have a direction and you actually end up forgetting about previous characters. Halfway through I even had trouble remembering what the start was. Unlike all of the previous Ju-On movies, in some way the methods they've died and the reasons they've died has been linked to how the curse first came about. But in Black Ghost it just isn't there, you fairly quickly lose interest despite it only being an hour in length. Very disappointing, poor movie for the Ju-On collection, and not only that, but a poor movie as far as horrors go.
2/5
Overall: Its worth buying this purely for White Ghost, it's a great piece of horror. It's a truly scary movie which'll have you hiding behind the sofa. It's a shame it wasn't longer as it really is a great movie, well worthy of a cinema release.
Shame, Black Ghost doesn't live up to the reputation, it could've been better but just lacked all the fundementals which make Ju-On such a successful horror series.
