Peppermint Candy could primarily be classed as an art house movie, it's story is not in the conventional A to B pattern, rather it starts at D and moves all the way back to the beginning.
As the story takes you back in time, first a few days then a few years and eventually a decade or so. The story begins to unravel itself and you begin to understand exactly why the character ended up the way he was.
Ultimately, this is a case study, every scene features the lead actor. You watch his every move and get into his head, you try to understand what drove him to his "grand finale".
The writing and directing is brilliant, the story is well crafted with a number of complex elements. The story being presented in reserve is a great idea which really makes this movie hit the spot.
The acting is Oscar worthy, the lead actor Kim Yeo-jin is of a top calibre, he has a range of emotions and is believable with each one. When he laughs you feel his happiness, when he cries you feel his sadness...a performance to behold.
Overall: Peppermint Candy is a great movie, in the first quarter it feels a tad slow but for the remainder of the movie you'll be sucked in.
Brilliant performances in a brilliantly written and brilliantly directed production makes Peppermint Candy one of those must see movies.
Brilliant!
