When it first aired in 2006 Heroes gave viewers a fresh spin on the superhero genre as we were introduced to a great ensemble cast just as they began to discover they had superpowers. We soon learnt that each of these characters is to play some role in a nuclear explosion due to take place in New York in the near future. Throughout the first season the writers flawlessly juggled the stories of every character with all 24 episodes providing unmissable viewing and helping to progress the story towards a fantastic finale that the audience had been anticipating for months.

The impending explosion in New York gave the shows first season a direction and without a common goal for each of the huge cast this was seriously lacking in the second season that unfortunately saw many of the characters stories taking dull and unnecessary side roads that did little to progress the overall plot. The fact that many of these side stories were abandoned at the start of the third season speaks volumes as to how they were critically received.

The final two seasons made a better attempt to replicate what at first made the show great but it was never quite able to return to its former glory and viewers continued to switch off. Too often characters acted inconsistently or were brought back in a way that felt forced and unnatural. Before Heroes inevitable cancellation many viewers had understandably abandoned the show that had almost became a victim of its own initial quality and only hardcore fans stuck with it until the very end.
