The final film in the pre-The Avengers project to bring many of the Marvel superhero films arrived in late 2011 with Captain America and it ends up being a highly enjoyable retro feeling action adventure film with some great production design and fun performances.
The 1940s era reproduction seems to suit director Joe Johnston well (and helps lend the film a quite possibly intentional vibe of The Rocketeer which Johnston directed back in the early 1990s) and looks fantastic. The performances across the board are pretty solid and Chris Evans manages to fill out the costume with just about enough room to breathe!
But like the other 2011 film in the series Thor and even Iron Man 2 there ends up being a feel just a little too much that the film is trying to fit in too much SHIELD and actual The Avengers information (a problem that really let down Iron Man 2) to be able to concentrate fully on the 40s adventure and I confess I think I would rather see more adventures set in the 1940s with the character rather than his transplantation to the modern age to appear in this May's The Avengers................but you can't have it all ways.
Nontheless, this is still a fun adventure that has most of the ingredients needed for a good couple of hours.
