I liked it better the second viewing from the Boxset

When I first saw this on Sky One, it was not what I expected, and found it a bit boring at times, as what other have said. I also found the arguing a bit much too, but it did not seem to bother me too much when watching it again from the DVDs.

In a way it reminded me a bit of Blakes 7 - Avon and Blake were against each other like Rush and Young.

There also seemed bits missing and incomplete watching on Sky One, which is what prompted me to buy this boxset. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the DVDs, and suddenly got addicted to the series, and even watched 2 or 3 epsiodes together.

The first 3 episodes, a trilogy, called Air was definatly extended, and were all on the first disc, giving you a choice to watch the broadcast version or an extended version. The other episodes did not have specific extended versions, so either were all uncut or as I accepted the show for what it was, and got more involved with it, I did not lose interest which made me miss things when first watching it on Sky One.

I am not too sure at the moment whether to bother watching all of Series 2 on Sky One, which is currently airing, or wait until it arrives on DVD next year, but I am now a fan of this show, and also enjoyed watching the Kino videos and extras.

Watching it on Sky One, I would rate it 3 stars, after watching this series from this boxet, I now rate it 5 stars.

The previous review raises several valid points. Stargate Universe feels like the production team have watched the new Battlestar Galactica and then proceded to re-shoot it in the Stargate universe.

We have the Doctor character who works for his own ends and tries to subvert everything for his own needs. The young military hotshot with a sensitive side. The "Adama" character is an old school leader of men, under pressure and with a personnel life in crisis. Basically just take the BSG crew and re-name...you won't be far off.

The camera work, direction and interior/art design screams BSG in every frame. Dark, moody interiors. Shakey, fly-on-the-wall camera work. Lots of fast zooming and snap-to shots.

All this would be acceptable if the plots and writing held your attention in classic Stargate style. They don't. In 10 episodes nothing of import happens until the last 3 minutes of the final episode. Seriously ... nothing.

As for that last episode it leaves us with a cliffhanger thats resolution is so transparent as to leave the viewer with no curiousity at all. In fact I really don't care what happens to the characters at all.

All this and only 10 episodes...to be fair I don't think I could've put myself through much more in any case.

In all honesty they ripped off every element of BSG but left the soul behind and done the stargate franchise (of which I am huge fan) no favors at all. Leave this well alone.

 Give it a chance.

I've followed Stargate from day one and don't understand the negativity behind this series. Obviously this is not another SG-1 or Atlantis, but in my opinion it's better. Perhaps the best sci-fi show out there.

The series features a much more realistic tone. The characters are also much more developed and for sceptics who were let down by the slow pace of the first half of the series, I beg you to at least contuinue watching until the end of the series where the pace picks up.

In a nutshell it's a perfect mixture of classic sci-fi and character based story's. I should also note that the tone is much darker than previous series and may not be as suitable for the youngest audiences.

I was never a fan of the SG series as I felt it was a mockery of a great film. However SGU brings all the silly theory and unrealistic discoveries to some good use. All around brilliant and well worth it's money

I am surprised by the poor/average reviews too!?
I watch a lot of TV programmes - most are apalling (at best) so why this deserves such reviews I have no idea. I loved Stargate SG1 and had high hopes for Stargate Atlantis. I like that too! SO - I thought SG Universe would be the one to be dreadful...I was expecting to hate it - the only thing that really caught my eye was Robert Carlyle,
Good storylines, good characters, great acting (Rob.C in SG awesome!), well made generally(The Man eating Bug planet is 1 to watch). Just all round great TV. (Casting Robert Carlyle was a good decision!)
I have pre ordered it without any fear of the unseen episodes (I have only seen the first half of series one) and can't wait for the rest. Hope for nine more series! :-)
