From the literary phenomenon by Stieg Larsson comes this gripping new thriller which will have you guessing right until the very end.

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family. There was no corpse, no witnesses, no evidence. Nearly forty years later a journalist by the name of Mikael Blomqvist gets an unusual assignment. He's contacted by Harriet's uncle, Henrik Vanger, who wants him to find out what really happened to Harriet. Mikael takes on the job, with help from mysterious biker girl and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. This unlikely pair form a fragile bond as they dig into the sinister past of this family and find out just how far they're prepared to go to protect themselves - and each other.

This is what a thriller should be

First of all watch it in Swedish with subs then watch it again with the English audio commentary. The two lead actors are so understated and act so well together. The girl (Noomi Rapace) is absolutely top class, I have not seen a performance as good as this for a long time. It is a long film but to be true to the book it has to catch all the detail of the research the journalist must do to complete his quest. I don't think really the ending is such a big twist it's more of an alternative conclusion to what audiences or readers may have expected. This is top entertainment and better as it was set in Sweden; the setting captures the cold and the bleakness of the dark story. The sub plot regarding the probate issue and the girl's past perhaps could have been better explained, unless you have read the book the film does not quite clarify this and you could get the wrong message here but that is only a minor criticism.
The central theme of hatred of women comes across loud and clear and is woven together perfectly in an intricate and satisfactory narrative. How very typical of the Americans to want to do a reprise, or re-make or whatever ghastly word they use when they hack a perfect film to pieces.

 Excellent film!

Can't wait to have this film in my collection! Saw it at the cinema after waiting for what felt like an age after reading the book - I was not disappointed at all. Excellent film and exceptionally true to the story. The subtitles weren't a problem although thought they would be perhaps before seeing the film. And yes, an American film will be made of the story, but all aficionados doubt it will be anything like as good as this version. A very dark, powerful story with incredible characters and actors portraying them.

 one part of great set

for me this was a great film. i havent read any of the books so i didnt really know what it was about, the story line can be a bit boring at times but when u get into it it is very entertaining the acting is good, i didnt like it in english ( because u could tell it was dubbed) but with the subtitles it was a brilliant film. for me the girl who played with fire is better, and im looking forward to watching the girl who kicked the hornets nest which is in cinimas 29th of november.. i totally recomend this if your not just watching it for action because it wont deliver in thatr gender of film

 All Hail Mr Larsson

I loved the book (and its successors in the trilogy), and the story of Lisbeth Salander is brilliantly portrayed in this cinematic adaptation. The cast perfectly represent Larsson's literary characterisations and although elements of the book are slightly changed to accommodate the 2 and a half hour film version, the plot is excellently showcased revealing the complexities behind Salander's friendship with Blomkvist, her unfailing independence and lack of trust in authority, as well as the underpinning tale of cruelty and family expose that runs throughout the piece and joins it all together. Don't bother with the forthcoming Hollywood attempt - this is the one to see.

 Brilliant

If you loved the books, you will not be disappointed with the film. I can't think of anyone that could have played Lisbeth better than Noomi. Don't wait for the Hollywood remake as it can't possibly outdo the Swedish one. It stuck to the story much closer than I was expecting, and was just as edge of the seat as the book was. Marvellous!
